    And that is that.

The umpires have called an early end to day three with rain wiping out the final two sessions.

At the start of the day we saw England's fightback continue with Heather Knight progressing to 168 not out before Katherine Brunt took two wickets to reduce Australia to 12-2.

The hosts only lead by 52 but the draw seems the most likely result going into the final day.

    Bad news.

The rain that arrived on the stroke of lunch has got heavier and is still falling in Canberra.

There is not going to be any play for a while.

It's frustrating because this Test is intriguingly poised.

After Heather Knight's sublime 168 not out dragged England to 297 all out, Katherine Brunt took two wickets to reduce Australia to 12-2.

Australia only lead by 50. If the rain clears we could have a thriller on our hands.

What a Test this is turning into. England are well and truly alive.

Katherine Brunt has taken two early wickets with Australia 12-2 in their second innings, just 52 ahead.

Brunt had Alyssa Healy caught behind in the first over, the Australia opener bagging a pair, and Rachael Haynes was snaffled at short leg.

That all came after Heather Knight's superb 168 not out took England to 297 all out.

The bad news is rain has arrived on the stroke of lunch. England need it to clear after the interval as they hunt something incredible.

    Heather Knight, take a bow.

The England captain ends with 168 not out as England are finally dismissed for 297.

They were crumbling on day two at 120-6 and 169-8 but Knight has ensured they concede a first-innings deficit of just 40.

Knight put on exactly 100 with Sophie Ecclestone who was finally out lbw to Tahlia McGrath for 34.

Kate Cross was the last batter out for 11, caught at fine leg off Ellyse Perry.

England have some bowling conditions as they hunt second-innings Australia wickets.

After an hour's play on day three England are still batting.

Heather Knight has brought up her 150, continuing her stunning effort from day two to progress beyond her previous high score of 157.

But, a ball after bringing up the hundred partnership with Knight, Sophie Ecclestone finally fell for 34 from 117 balls.

She was out lbw to Tahlia McGrath but has helped bring England back into this game from 169-8.

They are 282-9 at drinks, 55 runs behind.

The fact England are still in this Test and - the series as a whole - is all down to their captain.

Heather Knight hit a superb 127 not out on day two to rescue the tourists when they looked set to fail to reach the follow-on mark.

Day three begins at 23:00 GMT with England resuming on 235-8, still 102 runs behind, so there is plenty of work to do.

However, they have a chance of escaping with a draw and, who knows, maybe an unlikely win.
