Ben Stokes gets one to stay low but Rassie van der Dussen does well to claw it out. One more over due before tea.

A lot of cricket still left and if South Africa can bat for another thirty or fifty overs, they might have a chance. The longer you bat, the more the belief starts kicking in that you can do it.

Fairly quiet period of play since lunch, so the people in the party stand at Old Trafford are entertaining themselves by throwing sombreros and beach balls around. Meanwhile, the people in the alcohol-free stand have started doing their Wordles and crosswords. Cricket really is a game for everyone.
Ruth Brooksbank, (hoping that some wickets fall soon)
It's beer snake o'clock in the stands. Jack Leach tempts Keegan Petersen into a loose shot and there's almost the whiff of a stumping but he's safe.

Sam Lockwood: The 'Bore option' seems to be working for South Africa. This way they'll ensure they will make England bat again. Let's hope that the new ball produces the magic we need.

The crowd is getting restless and making their own entertainment.
Tim the enchanter, good guy.
Shot! No, we're not not even due the excitement of a four as Rassie van der Dussen toe ends one towards, but not to, the boundary. Jimmy Anderson is yawning widely in the field. The game needs a lift.

I was wondering if Tim in Crewe was still alive. Haven’t heard from him in months.

And we've seen how lethal England can be with the harder ball.

There's still 20 overs until the new ball.
Jack Leach is back into the attack, which isn't offering much in the way of attack to be honest. Keegan Petersen chops one away for a single.

Jon Baglow: How about US swimmer Dara Torres? Aged 41 she won 3 silver medals in the 2008 Summer Olympics (50m freestyle, 4×100m medley relay and 4×100m freestyle relay).
Good shape from Ben Stokes this time, arcing the ball away from a reaching Rassie van der Dussen but there's no edge. South Africa are 129 behind and the chance of us having play on Sunday and Monday grows all the time.
In the stands the watching thousands cheer a man dressed as the chicken-cooking Colonel down a pint. What a scene.

Nothing sexier than a strike rate of less than 30 in Test cricket.

This partnership is moving towards a hundred. South Africa have made it hard for England this afternoon.
The crowd are making their own fun as a man with an inflatable guitar takes centre stage. It's better than the last time I was at Old Trafford anyway when it was so cold at the top of that temporary stand that my friend had to go and buy a Lancs hoodie for about £75.
Stuart Broad is pulled away for a couple to end another over.
Not happening for England at the minute. I can confirm there are clouds overhead at BBC Sport HQ which is not far from Old Trafford.
1.8 miles, to be precise. Bit of afternoon rain?

Are South Africa going to do this? No, they’re not. They’ve gone for the ‘bore everyone’ option.

Halfway there for South Africa. It's been slow progress. England have tried everything they can, even though they are still in control. You can't criticise England for being un-proactive.
