  1. NZ 0-0

Bit of aggression first up from Finn Allen, shovelling the ball to mid-on but unable to get a run.

  2. Post update

Finn Allen and Devon Conway open the batting for New Zealand and Mitchell Starc is going to bowl the first over for Australia.

I think anything under 170, the way that T20 cricket is played now is just not enough. If you look at the history of T20 cricket in Sydney though, New Zealand might need a bit more.

  4. Post update

The anthems are done, in front of an SCG that is filling up very nicely. You can see the wind blowing against the players' shirts so it's not perfect cricket conditions, but the rain is staying away for now.

The umpires make their way to the middle and we're all set. A fierce rivalry to kick things off, but who will take the bragging rights?

    Let's find out!

I actually give New Zealand a hope tonight. They've got players that, on their day, can do real damage, especially with the ball.

The question is whether they can get the runs on the board against an Australia team full of world-class stars that can win you a game in three or four overs.

  7. Who will win the World Cup?

After a gripping week of upsets and nervy encounters to decide the four teams joining the Super 12s, and they ended up being Ireland, Zimbabwe, Netherlands and Sri Lanka.

We mentioned Australia being favourites but it still looks a wide open field.

Can England come good when it matters? Will home advantage help Australia defend their title 12 months on? Or can India bounce back from their early exit last time to win the title?

Have a read of BBC Sport's predictions, with a guide to each team's array of big hitters and world-class bowlers.

  8. Post update

Australia batter David Warner: "We can't wait to get underway. The build-up has been fantastic, we've got our playing XI sorted to defend our title on home soil.

"Generally the pitch can be quite low and slow here, there has been some rain but hopefully that stays away tonight and we get a good game in.

"I'm not nervous, I love these occasions. They're what I play for and I'm here to entertain, hopefully hit some fours and sixes and get us off to a good start."

  9. The Teams

Australia: David Warner, Aaron Finch (capt), Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Tim David, Matthew Wade (wk), Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood.

New Zealand: Finn Allen, Devon Conway (wk), Kane Williamson (capt), Glenn Phillips, Mark Chapman, Jimmy Neesham, Mitchell Santner, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee, Lockie Ferguson, Trent Boult.

  10. Post update

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson: "We would have had a bowl too, but the surface looks good so we can get to use it first up.

"Some weather has affected our preparation but I think everyone's had that.

"We've got to focus on our game throughout the tournament and not dwell on last year. Everything's new and fresh and that's the mindset we're coming in with, to stick to our own plans."

  11. Post update

Australia captain Aaron Finch: "There's a bit of weather around but we expect the wicket to get better here as the game goes on. Our preparation has been great, the boys are ready to go.

"Every time you represent Australia or play in a World Cup there's pressure and expectation, but hopefully we and the fans will come away happy.

"We always get amazing support, I can't wait to play in front of our crowds."

  12. Australia win the toss and bowl first

Captain Aaron Finch calls correctly and chooses to bowl first, saying he expects the pitch to get better for batting as the day goes on.

The weather looks okay at the moment in Sydney, so hopefully we won't have any delays to contend with!

We'll bring you the team news shortly.

  13. Welcome

Good morning! It's time for the Super 12 stage to begin and what a game we've got to kick things off.

It's a repeat of last year's final, New Zealand taking on eventual winners, and this year's favourites, Australia.

Can the Aussies start their title defence with a win? Or will New Zealand sneak in a surprise, as they so often do?
