Lancashire batter Josh Bohannon celebrated a "nice milestone" after becoming only the second Division One batter to reach 1,000 Championship runs on day two at Northampton.

His 175 means he is now the leading scorer in the top flight with 1,063 runs, having made 128 and 103 in his previous two innings against the same opponents.

“You’re only as good as your last innings and the next one could easily be very different. It’s nice to contribute to putting us in a great position and hopefully going on to win the game," Bohannon said.

“It’s my first time past 1,000 runs, which is a nice milestone to tick off but it’s no good if we’re not in a good position to win. I didn’t know how many I was on until I came off – honestly I don’t look into that stuff. I don’t even know how to work the app!"

  10. Surrey looking to wrap up victorypublished at 10:21 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Surrey 396 v Warwicks 161 & 126-7 (match resumes at 10:30)

Dan Worrall has taken six wickets in the game so far for SurreyImage source, Rex Features

Division One leaders Surrey will be looking to finish the job at The Oval and take a big step towards a second successive title after taking 17 Warwickshire wickets on day two and enforcing the follow-on.

Defeat will end Warwickshire's slim title hopes and because they only managed two batting points in their game against Somerset, we make it that Hampshire will be out of the equation too.

The Bears need another 109 to make Surrey bat again and although Dan Mousley is 60 not out, he only has the tail for company.

  11. 'Fun' for spinners at Chelmsford - de Cairespublished at 10:17 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

Essex 303-9 v Middlesex (match resumes at 10:30)

Middlesex spinner Josh de Caires expressed concern about the impact Essex's Simon Harmer could have on the game after a career-best 7-105 on day one at Chelmsford.

Following an opening stand of 122 between Sir Alastair Cook and Nick Browne, the home side lost wickets at regular intervals as the 21-year-old bowled as if he didn't have a de Caires in the world.

"It’s nice bowling from the River End. There’s a nice, big rough patch for right-handers. It’s not spinning that much from the straight, but out of the rough is where you have your fun as an off-spinner," he said.

"Yes, Simon Harmer is definitely on everyone's minds. Batters will have to find their own way of playing him."

  12. Batters 'not delivering enough' - Kerrpublished at 10:13 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Hants 308 & 45-0 v Somerset 137 (match resumes at 10:30)

Somerset head coach Jason KerrImage source, Rex Features

Head coach Jason Kerr admitted Somerset need more from their batters to become a force in Championship cricket after they were bowled out for 137 by Hampshire on day two at the Ageas Bowl.

Andy Umeed and Tom Lammonby were the only two to pass 20 as Keith Barker took 5-32 for the home side.

"We are absolutely trying to win the last three games of the season and finish as high as possible but I'm also looking towards 2024 and how to improve what we are delivering with the bat," said Kerr.

"If we do that we will become a very competitive side but at the minute we're not quite doing that."

  13. Durham 'want three wins to finish'published at 10:09 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

Durham 422-5 v Sussex (match resumes at 10:30)

Durham opener Alex Lees insisted wins were more important than individual performances after hitting his fifth Championship century of the season on day two against Sussex.

They began the game 40 points clear at the top of Division Two and are clear favourites to secure promotion as champions.

"I've not looked at the other scores, but we've got three games left including this one. If we win here and the next two, bonus points don't really come into it," Lees said.

"The main thing for me is to keep on replicating what I'm doing out there and putting in match-winning performances for Durham and getting these three final wins."

  14. Foxes ready for run-chase in close contestpublished at 10:06 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Leics 204 v Gloucs 159 & 179-8 (match resumes at 10:30)

An intriguing finish may be in prospect at Leicester today, with Gloucestershire 134 ahead with only two wickets remaining in what has been a low-scoring game so far.

Promotion-chasing Leicestershire, who beat the same opponents to reach the One-Day Cup final, are probably favourites, but will be taking nothing for granted in the fourth innings.

"It has been the kind of pitch that we’re not used to at Grace Road, it is seaming around a bit more with the grass left on," said opener Rishi Patel.

“We’re still in with a chance of promotion. You’d hope we are a couple of wins away from going really close, so hopefully we’ll get over the line and start thinking about Sussex next."

"The hot and sunny weather continues today" according to BBC Weather. Amen to that!

It's day three in the current round of Championship matches - or day two if you're operating on Chelmsford time - and we can expect at least a couple of early finishes in the eight games.

It would take something miraculous from Warwickshire to deny title favourites Surrey at The Oval, allowing Rory Burns & co to get the knotted hankies and deckchairs out and say to rivals Essex 'go on then, match that'.

Welcome to our coverage. Play begins at 10:30.
