Day two was not a good one for Leicestershire. Their batting failure not only handed Durham promotion, but it has made their job of winning this game and putting pressure on second-placed Worcestershire that much harder.

They begin day three 388 runs adrift of Sussex, looking to wrap up the hosts' second innings quickly before they can have any thoughts of a mammoth run chase.

But for Sussex, a win could see them leapfrog the Foxes into third and keep alive their hopes of that second promotion spot.

So it's all to play for on the south coast.

"I think I probably bowled better on the first day," he said ."But it often works like that. You often get your rewards in the day after or the game after.

"I'll be starting on a hat-trick in the second innings. It happened a couple of times in the 50-over comp and I was close with play-and-misses from the first ball of the next game so hopefully first ball next innings, something special might happen."

But Northamptonshire bowler Jack White paceman took three wickets of his own - and will be hoping for more.

"It's a tough surface to score on," he told BBC Radio Northampton. "The ball was moving around a lot this morning, especially early on under lights with the new ball. It looked like it was doing a hell of a lot."

Nottinghamshire began this round 33 points clear of ninth-placed Kent, but that gap could close significantly over the next two days.

Kent fell just four runs shy of maximum batting points and need just one more wicket this morning to yield maximum points with the ball.

Six of the eight Notts wickets fell to the spin of Aron Nijjar and Indian international Yuzvendra Chahal.

Both players are making their debut for a Kent side that is very different in terms of personnel and strength compared to the XI that were beaten by 321 runs at Trent Bridge in July.

Notts have a potentially tough assignment against Lancashire at Old Trafford in the next round and will need to shore up their position here.

Brett Hutton and Dane Paterson will resume this morning, hoping to capture at least one batting bonus point.

It is safe to say that the September heatwave is well and truly over.

This is the picture from a miserably wet Old Trafford, a scene reminiscent of the Ashes Test in July, when rain ruined England's chances of wresting the urn out of Australia's grasp.

Prospects of play on day three between Lancashire and Middlesex do not look good.

There will also be a delay at Edgbaston where Warwickshire are playing Northants, it is still raining, on top of overnight precipitation and the covers remain on.

Bristol and Cardiff also have rain issues, but play will start on time at Canterbury and Hove, where Kent and Sussex will hope to cement their strong positions.

Patience, good humour and flexibility are probably the order of the day, but those are never in short supply for us county cricket lovers!
