In the words of our Notts commentator, a gull is "crowing" into the commentary mic at Canterbury - as Kent strive to take a sixth Nottinghamshire wicket.

A lucky break for Joe Clarke who nicks a ball from Aron Nijjar between keeper Harry Finch and first sip Zak Crawley for four runs.

    He's on 47.

"First alarm really for quite some time."

    Lancashire 322-4 v Middlesex 194

Dane Vilas has taken the headlines for his 100, but there is a fine half-century for George Bell as he nudges Ryan Higgins into the offside.

Just the third of his first-class career for the 20-year-old, this one off 75 balls.

Bell really looks like he could still be playing junior cricket!

    Lancashire 315-4 v Middlesex 194

    Kevin Hand
    BBC Radio London

Middlesex needed an early boost of wickets today to ignite their hopes of a victory in this match but Dane Vilas has stood firmly in their way.

A fabulous John Simpson catch after a charge by Luke Wells off Jayant Yadav is the only dismissal so far on another weather-interrupted day.

Indeed Lancashire now will themselves be the team pushing for victory on the final day, as the visitors scramble for the five points for a draw in their battle against relegation.

More runs at the other end as Lyndon James smashes an overpitched ball from Michael Hogan through the off side. Lovely flowing drive.

James is nearly foxed by the fourth ball which seams in and the batter jabs the blade down in the nick of time.

Four more clipped through mid wicket. Nine overs left tonight.

  11. 'Sweetest ton of all for Vilas'published at 17:10 British Summer Time 12 September 2023

    Lancashire 305-4 v Middlesex 194

    Scott Read
    BBC Radio Lancashire commentator

For seven seasons, four as captain, Dane Vilas has been an outstanding player for Lancashire.

This final season hasn't gone the way he would have imagined but such is the character of the man, he's signing off in style.

As skipper he dragged the team with him, leading the club superbly, a great ambassador on and off the field. He almost led Lancashire to the title on two occasions and three times to T20 Finals Day.

His 10th century for the club and his 25th of his first-class career might just feel the sweetest of them all.

    A brilliant century!

The former captain has been short of runs all summer, but that is a wonderful way for him to bow out.
