  1. Postpublished at 15:45 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Hants v Surrey 4-0 (Target: 185)

Liam Dawson sharing the new ball and finding turn straight away.

But it's one that skids through that almost gets Rory Burns.

A huge cry for caught behind but the umpire indicates it only brushed his back leg and replays validate the decision.

33 overs remain in the day.

  2. Follow-on enforced then off for bad lightpublished at 15:44 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Durham 457-8 dec v Leics 143 & 1-0 (f/o)

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Radio Newcastle

Durham have enforced the follow-on, contrary to what some in the ground would have us believe earlier.

Leicestershire were all out in 38 overs for just 143 as Ben Raine took 5-51 in 16 overs and Sri Lankan left-armer, Vishwa Fernando, 4-40 in 10. Ben Cox was the top scorer with 30 not out.

In theory there are still 43 overs left today and the scheduled close is 6pm but I would imagine the light may well have a say on that. And in fact they've just gone off after one over of Leicestershire's second innings!

  3. Postpublished at 15:39 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Kent 494 v Lancashire 327 & 72-0

The final session has begun at Canterbury and Keaton Jennings has helped himself to a couple of fours and Luke Wells, one.

They have brought the deficit down to less than 100.

  4. Tea at Trent Bridgepublished at 15:34 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Nottinghamshire 319-7 v Middlesex 366

And with the fall of Harrison, the players head off for a cup of tea.

Middlesex lead by 47, but they need to locate the accelerator, and quickly!

  5. wicket

    WICKET Harrison c Simpson b Roland-Jones 27published at 15:31 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Nottinghamshire 319-7 v Middlesex 366

Middlesex captain Toby Roland-Jones finally comes to the party!

Into his 18th over and he has his first wicket. Going round the wicket to Calvin Harrison, he gets the batter strangled down leg with John Simpson pouching it.

  6. Surrey begin chasepublished at 15:28 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Hants v Surrey 0-0 (Target: 185)

Rory Burns strides out as a County Championship winning captain once more.

Dom Sibley is alongside him to begin what could be a very tricky chase of 185 to end the season with a ninth victory.

Nine wickets fell to spin in the Hampshire second innings.

But it's Mohammad Abbas with the new ball.

  7. Postpublished at 15:24 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Nottinghamshire 317-6 v Middlesex 366

BBC Radio Lancashire's Scott Read suggest the relegation battle is still up in the air, but Middlesex really are in a tight squeeze.

They have to win and they are still four wickets shy of dismissing Notts in their first innings.

Number eight Calvin Harrison has reached 27, but his nuisance value is worth much more to the visitors.

  8. 'Where is the relegation battle going?'published at 15:22 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Kent 494 v Lancashire 327 & 55-0

    Scott Read
    BBC Radio Lancashire commentator

A slightly early tea in Canterbury in a frustrating end to the session for Kent.

Having batted well to secure a heathy first innings lead what they would have given for a repeat of the first innings when Lancashire were 18-3.

Instead they've come up against Luke Wells and Keaton Jennings who have given them nothing.

Will spin play a part later today? Will a draw be enough for Kent? We're heading into the final session on the third day none the wiser as to where the relegation battle is going.

NORTHAMPTONSHIRE BEAT ESSEX BY AN INNINGS AND 39 RUNSpublished at 15:13 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Northants 369 v Essex 211 & 119 (Porter b White 11)

Jack White has finished it off to claim 5-57 and Northants have wrapped up a huge win to end a poor season on a high.

Essex rolled over in only 27 overs after they had the stuffing knocked out of them this morning.

They came back four down in their first innings dreaming of getting to 400 to try and steal the title from Surrey.

But they didn't get close and following on have played like a side completely devoid of purpose.

It was a superb run to take the title race to the final round but the final day last week where they couldn't force victory at home to Hampshire was always going to make it very difficult.

Northants were relegated last week but can take heart from two strong performances against the best two sides in the country in the final two rounds.

  10. Tea at Canterburypublished at 15:09 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Kent 494 v Lancashire 327 & 55-0

The players are coming off as the rain comes down in the garden of England.

And that will be tea... three balls early!

  11. wicket

HAMPSHIRE ALL OUTpublished at 15:09 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Hants 219 & 172 (Dawson c Overton b Steel 34) v Surrey 209

Liam Dawson sweeps Cameron Steel for four but then charges, swings and edges a catch to slip.

Steel finishes with 4-40 and Will Jacks 5-87.

    Surrey have 185 to chase.

  12. Five-wicket haul for Will Jackspublished at 15:04 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Hants 219 & 168-9 (Abbott lbw b Jacks 12) v Surrey 209

Will Jacks complete his second first-class five-for, spinning one into Kyle Abbott's back pad from round the wicket.

Liam Dawson still there on 30. Can he take the target beyond 200? He'll certainly fancy another bowl on this pitch regardless.

  13. 50 runs

partnership for Lancspublished at 15:02 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Kent 494 v Lancashire 327 & 50-0

A single to Luke Wells is enough for a half-century opening partnership between him and Keaton Jennings.

Lancashire now trail by 117 runs.

  14. They're off again!published at 15:02 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Durham 457-8 dec v Leics 143-9

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Radio Newcastle

Leicestershire are nine down in their first innings and still more than 300 runs behind at 143-9, but the light is causing problems again.

So far in the 15 overs possible today three wickets have fallen and 47 runs have been added. Ben Cox has 30 and is The Foxes' top scorer.

Ben Raine has taken five wickets in 16 overs to leave him on 59 dismissal for the championship season, equalling his previous best in 2015 when he played for Leicestershire.

There is a suggestion Durham will not enforce the follow-on because a decent crowd is expected tomorrow for the trophy presentation. At this rate the game will be heading into tomorrow anyway!

  15. wicket

WICKET Cook c Nair b Keogh 0published at 15:01 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Essex 100-9 f/o trail Northants by 58

Sam Cook has a run at Rob Keogh and swings a catch high to long-on running in.

    Almost there.

  16. 300 runs

up for Nottspublished at 15:01 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Nottinghamshire 301-6 v Middlesex

Lovely shots off his from Calvin Harrison brings the Notts total over 300 and accumulates their second batting point.

They are chipping away at this Middlesex total and trail by just 65.

  17. wicket

WICKET Harmer b White 6published at 14:57 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Essex 99-8 f/o trail Northants by 59

Northants closing in on just their second win of the season.

Jack White with his fourth wicket as a ball just full of a good length goes away enough to beat Simon Harmer's outside edge and find the top of off stump.

Everyone's getting a little thirsty now no doubt.

  18. Postpublished at 14:56 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Nottinghamshire 296-6 v Middlesex 366

We still have a possible 47 overs of play at Trent Bridge today.

Calvin Harrison has settled in alongside centurion Ben Slater. Middlesex are really grafting but it has been hard to make things happen quickly.

  19. Time for spinpublished at 14:53 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Kent 494 v Lancashire 327 & 47-0

Luke Wells and Keaton Jennings have reduced the deficit to 127 and seen off 11 overs of seam.

But Aron Nijjar's slow left-arm is going to begin the spin attack. And it is probably Kent's best way of forcing a victory.

Jennings gets three off the first few balls before Wells crunches the last one to the fence.

  20. wicket

WICKET Walter c Zaib b White 73published at 14:48 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Essex 96-7 f/o trail Northants by 62

Paul Walter was single-handedly trying to whack Essex from embarrassment.

He slog-swept Rob Keogh for three sixes in his first over.

But he then tries to control a pull off Jack White and steers it to deep-backward square.

A slightly tame end to an entertaining knock off just 53 balls and Essex are facing an innings defeat.
