  1. 6 runs

Postpublished at 11:36 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Kent 403-5 v Lancashire 327

Tom Hartley bowls a shoulder high full-toss to Joe Denly and the batter hooks it for six to bring up the 400 and accrue a fourth batting point.

The umpire signals a no-ball as well, effectively making it an eight!

    Kent now lead by 76.

  2. wicket

WICKET Finch b Balderson 44published at 11:30 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Kent 395-5 v Lancashire 327

First wicket of the morning at Canterbury.

Only two balls after a Harry Finch boundary down to deep third brought up the 150 partnership, then George Balderson rattles one into the timbers.

A fine team performance from Finch and for Joe Denly at the other end.

  3. Yadav bowlingpublished at 11:27 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Nottinghamshire 132-2 v Middlesex 366

India spinner Jayant Yadav opens with a maiden over.

Middlesex need him to find something special as things are very quiet at Trent Bridge.

  4. Hartley into the attackpublished at 11:26 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Kent 390-4 v Lancashire 327

Left-armer Tom Hartley is into the Lancashire attack for his second over of the morning (and the match).

Hartley was on duty for England in the abandoned ODI against Ireland at Bristol on Tuesday, but he has replaced Will Williams in the line-up today.

Kent had Zak Crawley down to step in, but the England opener is unwell. Not that they have needed him as it turns out.

  5. wicket

    WICKET Middleton c & b Jacks 9published at 11:18 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Hants 219 & 18-2 v Surrey 209

Will Jacks was parachuted into the game yesterday after playing for England on Tuesday but could make only 24.

But he strikes third ball with his off spin.

One sticks in the pitch a little, Fletcha Middleton is there way too soon with a back-foot punch and lobs the simplest of catches back to the bowler.

Not the way Middleton would have wanted to end his season. He's played in every game but only made 610 runs at 25.

  6. 1000 runs for Clarkepublished at 11:18 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Nottinghamshire 126-2 v Middlesex

Joe Clarke guides an Ethan Bamber delivery down to backward point for a couple.

That brings the Notts batter up to 1000 Championship runs for the summer, the first time with Notts after doing it once with Worcestershire.

Always a fine achievement for any batter.

Clarke is the fourth player to reach that in Division One behind Josh Bohannon (Lancashire), Tom Westley (Essex) and James Rew (Somerset).

  7. Elsewhere...published at 11:14 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

Warwickshire have lost an early wicket against Somerset in Division One. Dan Mousley edged Josh Davey's fourth ball of the day to slip and the Bears are now 135-4. They trail by 80.

In Division Two, Glamorgan are 40-0 in reply to Derbyshire's 450-8 dec - it might be a tough ask for Derbyshire to get 20 wickets and pick up their first win of the season.

Tom Alsop and James Coles are both going along nicely for Sussex against Gloucestershire at Hove. Both have passed fifty with Sussex on 293-3 and leading by exactly 300.

After a delayed start, play is set to get under way at 11:15 between Yorkshire and Worcestershire. There's no word on a start time at Chester-le-Street where champions Durham are taking on Leicestershire.

  8. Time for spin?published at 11:10 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Nottinghamshire 119-2 v Middlesex 366

With Kent continuing on their merry way, it feels like Middlesex's Division One status is slipping away.

No wickets so far this morning.

The spin of Jayant Yadav and Josh de Caires can't be far away.

  9. Postpublished at 11:01 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Kent 367-4 v Lancashire 327

A very nice opening half hour for Kent batters Joe Denly and Harry Finch.

They have accumulated 22 runs without too much fuss, collected the third batting point and got themselves in.

Kent can look to set up a very big first innings lead here.

  10. Close!published at 10:54 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Nottinghamshire 105-2 v Middlesex 366

Tom Helm drops one in to Ben Slater and the opener takes on the hook shot.

There are three men out on the legside and it flies just over the head of Mark Stoneman, at deep fine leg.

Yet Stoneman was about 10 yards in from the ropes. If he was right on the boundary, that would have been straight down his throat.

Things like that can be the difference between winning and losing.

  11. wicket

WICKET Albert lbw b Worrall 3published at 10:54 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Hants 219 & 13-1 v Surrey 209

    Surrey strike!

Full and straight from Dan Worrall, a hint of shape in but Toby Albert has got the line wrong and plays all around it. Out.

  12. Postpublished at 10:51 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Nottinghamshire 101-2 v Middlesex 366

The lights are on at Trent Bridge - these should be good conditions for bowling.

A fine ball from Ethan Bamber has Joe Clarke fishing outside off - more balls in that position could do the trick.

A typical Bamber over ends with six dot balls as he gets the ball in the right place.

  13. Postpublished at 10:49 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Hants 219 & 9-0 v Surrey 207

Fletcha Middleton with the first boundary of the morning as Hampshire look to get stuck in on day three.

The bowlers have been on top through the game so far so how many might the hosts be confident of defending?

There was also help for Liam Dawson’s left-arm spin yesterday.

  14. 100 runs

up for Nottspublished at 10:43 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Nottinghamshire 100-2 v Middlesex 366

Ethan Bamber hits Ben Slater on the pads and appeals for lbw. Optimistic to say the least, for a right-arm seamer bowling over the wicket to a left-hander.

Next ball, a bit of width and Slater guides it to the point ropes to bring up the 100.

  15. 'Kent fans are celebrating'published at 10:42 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Kent 351-4 v Lancashire 327

    Alex Hoad
    BBC Sport at Canterbury

A few whoops and a prolonged round of applause as the third Kent batting point is brought up by a Tom Bailey no ball.

The supporters know the significance of that point. If Kent draw this game then Middlesex will need to find a way to beat Notts at Trent Bridge.

If Kent win, then Middlesex are down.

  16. Third batting point for Kentpublished at 10:41 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Kent 351-4 v Lancashire 327

A Tom Bailey no-ball takes the Kent score above 350 and gives them a crucial third batting point.

Very significant - a sixth bonus point in this match and Middlesex cannot better that.

Middlesex will now almost certainly have to beat Nottinghamshire to have any chance of staying up.

  17. wicket

WICKET Walter b Taylor 41published at 10:39 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Northants 369 v Essex 132-5

Essex have to make 400 inside 110 overs to keep the title race alive and this is a terrible start to the day.

Paul Walter can only add five to his overnight score and becomes Tom Taylor’s first wicket of the innings in his final appearance for Northants.

The left-hander plays all around a straight one and two stumps go flying.

  18. Lancs open with spinpublished at 10:36 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Kent 349-4 v Lancashire 327

A maiden to start with from Tom Bailey.

With Will Williams taken out for Tom Hartley, and Jack Blatherwick not able to bowl for the rest of this innings, the left-arm spin of Jack Morley opens at the other end.

Joe Denly and Harry Finch accumulate four easy runs.

  19. 50 runs

for Ben Slaterpublished at 10:32 British Summer Time 28 September 2023

    Nottinghamshire 96-2 v Middlesex

Fourth ball of Ethan Bamber's first over of the day and Ben Slater gets the first runs with a cracking shot through the covers.

That four takes him to 53 off 93 balls.

Middlesex will not want him to add too many more.
