All times stated are UK

  1. Afg 7-0

Maiden over to start from Reece Topley. Very good start from the England left-arm seamer.

After the craziness of last night's match the atmosphere here is all very peaceful.

    I don't hate it.

  3. Post update

    Steven Finn

Former England bowler on BBC Test Match Special

The extra bit of lacquer on the balls here mean it swings for a little bit longer. The other side of that is the ball holds together later in the game which increases the chances of it disappearing to the boundary.

  4. Afg 7-0

After those five wides to start, Chris Woakes pulls it back well and concedes just two more runs from the over.

Both come from thick outside edges that head down to deep third.

  5. Post update

    Daniel Norcross

    BBC Test Match Special commentator

Five wides - a very untidy start! Jos Buttler should have taken that.

  6. Afg 5-0

No legal deliveries bowled and Afghanistan have five runs on the board.

Chris Woakes sends the ball down leg, it swings after going past the batter and stays a little low.

It should still be stopped by Jos Buttler but it sneaks through his legs and away to the boundary.

  7. Post update

The two teams are out, the anthems have been sung and the two enormous flags are now being taken from the field.

Chris Woakes will open the bowling for England. Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran are the Afghanistan opening pair.

  8. Post update

    Steven Finn

Former England bowler on BBC Test Match Special

Ben Stokes is not fit but as soon as he is fit he will come into that middle order, so there's jostling amongst those in there to be the one who does not miss out. There's a chance today for Liam Livingstone and Harry Brook to kickstart their tournament.

  9. Post update

    Michael Vaughan

Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

The story is all about when is Ben Stokes going to be fit. England will be desperate to get him back. It's an opportunity for Harry Brook to prove his worth. England have to win all the games from here on in to make sure they reach the semi-finals so will need to play their best team.

    Ben Stokes

With England unchanged today, that means there’s still no Ben Stokes because of his hip injury.

Before the toss he was going through intense running drills and looked as good as I’ve seen him on this trip.

England’s next game after this isn’t until Saturday against South Africa. I reckon Stokes may be available by then.

  11. 'Afghanistan can be dangerous'

    Chris Woakes and Mark Wood

Throughout this tournament Chris Woakes and Mark Wood are joining Tymal Mills for the latest Good Pace for Radio podcast.

In the last episode the duo spoke about what the squad are doing in their downtime, including rival tour groups headed by David Willey and Adil Rashid.

They also looked forward to this game with Woakes saying: “We’re coming off the back of a good performance against Bangladesh but we realise we’ve got to go again.

"It's the World Cup so almost every game you look at as a bit of a knockout game don’t you even though it’s still early days.

"You want to make sure you win every game so won’t be taking them (Afghanistan) lightly, that’s for sure, they can be dangerous on their day.”

    Steven Finn

Former England bowler on BBC Test Match Special

We saw a high-scoring game here between South Africa and Sri Lanka. This looks pitch also like a belter. I think Afghanistan will give themselves every opportunity but will face a fired up Reece Topley and Chris Woakes' booming outswingers. They will want to get a good score on the board then hope their spinners can play a part.

    Delhi

After a 5:55am alarm, two taxis and a flight I’ve made it from India v Pakistan in Ahmedabad to England v Afghanistan in Delhi.

Can England continue the form found in Dharamsala earlier in the week?

  14. The teams

England: Jonny Bairstow, Dawid Malan, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Jos Buttler (capt & wk), Liam Livingstone, Chris Woakes, Sam Curran, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood, Reece Topley.

Afghanistan: Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran, Rahmat Shah, Hashmatullah Shahidi (capt), Mohammad Nabi, Ikram Alikhil (wk), Azmatullah Omarzai, Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Naveen-ul-Haq, Fazalhaq Farooqi.

  15. Post update

Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi: “We also wanted to bowl first so now it's a 100-over game and we have to play all of them.

"It looks like a batting pitch, last game it was as well and we're expecting the same. We have to try and get as many runs as possible to try and put them under pressure.

"Above 300 will be a good target because we have good spinning options."

  16. 'It has looked like a good batting wicket so far'

England captain Jos Buttler: “We're going to bowl first, no particularly reason, it looks like a good wicket and we want to chase.

Team news?: "We've gone with an unchanged team.

Thoughts on the pitch?: "It's looked like a pretty good batting wicket so far, South Africa put on a big score here, India looked good chasing here too. We looked good in the last match and we want to back that up.

Key to winning today?: "We want to keep our momentum, we pride ourselves on our intensity and we want to keep that going today."

  17. England win the toss and bowl

The coin comes down in favour of England and Jos Buttler says that they will chase.

"It looks a pretty good batting wicket," he adds.

  18. Post update

The Cricket World Cup rolls on and India’s dominant win over Pakistan in Ahmedabad yesterday, the action moves to Delhi.

England take on Afghanistan aiming to build on the momentum of their comprehensive win against Bangladesh.

After defeat by New Zealand to start the tournament, Jos Buttler’s side have got very little margin for error…
