  1. Post update

Right then, that's us just about done but if England's Women's World Cup last-16 win has whet your appetite for more action from Canada then starting on BBC Two and online from 00:50 BST is USA versus Colombia as they go head-to-head for a place in the last eight.

We'll be back for live coverage of all the quarter-finals from Friday, so join us again then. Bye for now.

  2. Post update

    Norway 1-2 England

    Rachel Yankey

    Former England midfielder

"Canada's manager John Herdman does like to talk and he will play mind games. Norway tried that a little bit too, with all the talk in the press before the match. But I think England will cope with that, just as they did today.

"Canada beat England in the last warm-up game before the World Cup started, but they won't be taking a lot from that. I'm sure John will come out with a few things to say but they will be ready."

  3. Post update

    Norway 1-2 England

    Natasha Dowie

    Liverpool striker

"The warm-up game against Canada - it was not the best of games, quite edgy. I think the quarter-final tie will be completely different. England will need to use the crowd as a positive, believe in what they are good at and be a really tight group.

"Who will play against Canada? Against Norway Mark Sampson brought striker Jodie Taylor on. I don't know how fit she is after her injury problems before the tournament. She is probably not fit to start. Then there is Eni Aluko, who had been in great form coming into the tournament and started against France but has not played since. The coach has got a great handful to pick from."

  4. Post update

    Norway 1-2 England

It is barely a month since England last met Canada, with the two meeting in a Women's World Cup warm-up towards the end of May. Canada won that one, with England second best for large periods of the game. England look to have come on a fair bit since then, though.

  6. Post update

    Norway 1-2 England

    Rachel Yankey

    Former England midfielder

"Mark Sampson is the tinkerman, that's what everybody has been calling him. He will change the players, the formation I have no clue what team he will pick but I would go and play a nice game of positive football because that is what England are best at.

"Previous manager Hope Powell did a great job of setting up the team defensively over the years but the players felt frustrated that we went up to a certain point on the pitch and had no end product in the final third. We wanted to express ourselves and had the creative players to do that.

"England still do know how to defend but you have to give them a licence to express themselves, because I really believe they can go and win games."

    Lucy Bronze's winner

    England

Apparently that was Lucy Bronze's first shot on goal at the Women's World Cup. Reckon she will have a few more pops if she finds herself in similar positions against Canada.

You can watch the clip of Bronze's winner right here.

  8. Player reaction

    Norway 1-2 England

    Jill Scott

England's Jill Scott, who came on as a substitute against Norway: "It is all a bit of a blur. The heat was a big test for us but I am just so pleased to win, two fantastic goals and we are jut pleased not to be going home.

"It is difficult when you are not starting but I just felt like I kept myself ready and did my bit to help the team. We go through a lot of tactics before games and I felt like I knew what I was doing."

  9. Manager reaction

    Norway 1-2 England

    Mark Sampson

England head coach Mark Sampson: "The team have made history and they deserve all the credit in the world. We knew it was a big game and the squad wanted to write their names in English football history and they have stepped up and delivered for the country.

"We have seen in the tournament that if you concede the first goal it is incredibly difficult to win a game - but I thought the group showed incredible resilience, character and game discipline. We can take incredible confidence from this victory.

"The substitutes made an incredible impact today. The object was to get to Vancouver and we are there now. We have got to play a tough game but lets keep this journey going."

  11. Post update

    Norway 1-2 England

    Rachel Yankey

    Former England midfielder

"If England go 1-0 up on Canada there will be massive pressure on them, because everybody will be expecting them to go through - all the fans of the home nation. England will need to be patient but they also have to be expressive.

"Being an underdog you have nothing to lose. That will take the pressure off us. Today, people looked a bit nervous, as if maybe the history was pining them down. Now, they can just go out and play."

  12. Post update

    Norway 1-2 England

    Joy, oh joy.

  13. Post update

    Norway 1-2 England

    Natasha Dowie

    Liverpool striker

    John Herdman celebrates

"England need to get the balance right against Canada. They will need to keep it tight because Canada have gone far and will have a massive crowd behind them, but England will also need to have those players who can be positive going forward, because that is when they are at their best."

  14. Post update

  16. Post update

    Norway 1-2 England

    Former England goalkeeper Rachel Brown-Finnis

    BBC Radio 5 live

"Mark Sampson has really looked at changing the whole environment around the England team and has changed it for the better.

"Under him there has been a lot more consideration of things like how you really execute a gameplan. How you slow a game down if you need to, how to accelerate things when you can.

"England are gathering more and more momentum now. They are at the business end of the knockout stages and are winning games - their confidence is going to be growing. For me, that is only going to continue."

  17. Post update

    Norway 1-2 England

    Lucy Bronze celebrates

England goalscorer Lucy Bronze: "I guess scoring the goal is a bit of history but it was a team effort and a tough game to play in, we are ecstatic to have won.

"The goal - it was one where normally I would pass but in training when I get to the edge of the area people say 'why not shoot?' so when I did.

"What a terrific game it will be against Canada. We saw a sold-out crowd for their game on Sunday so now we need to put this game to bed and move on to the next one."

  18. Bronze's goal-den touch

    Norway 1-2 England

How much energy does Lucy Bronze have? She kept going and going in the searing heat and popped up with a beaut of goal.

Time to hear from the goal scorer now...

  19. Next up for England

    Norway 1-2 England

    England

England will face Canada in the quarter-finals on Sunday at 12:30 BST. Could they go all the way?

  20. Post update

    Norway 1-2 England

    Rachel Yankey

    Former England midfielder

"Maybe the occasion got to England in the first half because they are a better team than what they showed. After that, you just have to go and attack, to show what you can do, and they did that. They have showed their character, tonight.

"And looking at the route through, England could be making it all the way to the final now."

  21. Post update

    Norway 1-2 England

    Natasha Dowie

  24. Post update

    Sue Smith

    Former England forward

    Isabell Herlovsen reacts

"What a transformation - first half everyone was disappointed with England, in the second half they were absolutely fantastic. They stepped that bit higher, looked more positive on the ball. We said set pieces would be important and they were today.

"Jill Scott made a massive difference when she came on, provided more energy and width and showed qualify in possession."

  25. FULL-TIME

    Norway 1-2 England

They're through! Historic for England as they win a knockout game at a Women's World Cup for the first time thanks to a much improved second-half display and a brilliant winner by Lucy Bronze.

  26. Post update

    Norway 1-2 England

Norway launches the ball forward but regain the ball and knock it on for Jodie Taylor, who knocks it beyond her marker but can't get there quick enough. Seconds left.

  27. Post update

    Norway 1-2 England

    Former England goalkeeper Rachel Brown-Finnis

    BBC Radio 5 live

"This is history for England. The neutral might want to see both teams still going for it but England are doing well to slow things down. Norway are getting anxious and annoyed. Signs England are doing the right things."

  28. Post update

    Norway 1-2 England

Now it is Jodie Taylor's turn to take the ball towards the corner flag. It is not pretty, but it's effective.

  29. Post update

    Norway 1-2 England

Some good work by Jill Scott as she wastes a couple of precious seconds by taking the ball into the corner again. Boos ring out from the Norway fans, but England won't care.

  45. Post update

    Norway 1-2 England

    Former England goalkeeper Rachel Brown-Finnis

    BBC Radio 5 live

"That is a brilliant strike but what fantastic build-up play from England, too. Both substitutes combining with some lovely one-touch play, before Lucy Bronze opens up her body and rifles it home, brilliant technique. A sweet, rocket of a strike. There was no chance of the goalkeeper stopping that."

  46. Post update

    Norway 1-2 England

    Sue Smith

    Former England forward

    Lucy Bronze scores

"What a fantastic strike. It was excellent build-up play from Scott and Taylor, then an excellent strike from Bronze, forward from right-back. It's absolutely brilliant by England"

  47. GOAL

Norway 1-2 England - Lucy Bronze

    Lucy Bronze celebrates

SCREAMER! What a goal by Lucy Bronze and England are ahead! Some lovely link up play involving Jill Scott and Jodie Taylor ends with Bronze being teed up on the edge of the area and she smashes an unstoppable drive into the back of the net. Keeper got a hand to it, but no chance that was staying out.

  48. Post update

  49. Post update

    Norway 1-1 England

Laura Bassett is absolutely done for pace by Ada Hegerberg, who strides through on goal and has just Karen Bardsley to beat but the England goalkeeper does well to close down the gap and make the save. Moments later, Elise Thorsnes shoots over from a corner.

  50. Post update

    Norway 1-1 England

    Former England goalkeeper Rachel Brown-Finnis

    BBC Radio 5 live

"Much better from England now, they are finally playing the game in Norway's final third and are not letting them out easily, they're stifling them. It shows the good spirit that Mark Sampson has talked about - to not panic after conceding the goal, was key.

"England have taken the one chance they've made and there is plenty of this match to play."

  52. SUBSTITUTION

    Norway 1-1 England

Norway respond by making their second change of the game, striker Elise Thorsnes on for Kristine Minde and she is straight into action as a poor clearing header falls to her inside the area, but she shows rustiness to slice wide.

  53. Post update

    Norway 1-1 England

This is much better from England, forcing Norway back into their own half. They forge an opportunity when Steph Houghton knocks the ball on for Karen Carney to chase down the left. Her cross is just over the heads of her team-mates but runs out to an unmarked Jill Scott, whose low shot lacks power and accuracy. England, though, are giving Norway a few things to think about.

    Steph Houghton celebrates

"Just as England were wounded by that set piece from Norway they come back with one of their own. Steph Houghton timed her run perfectly and headed beautifully across the goalkeeper. Let's hope this energises England now, they were probably feeling a bit jaded but the captain has stepped up to score at a critical time. Game on!"

  60. GOAL

Norway 1-1 England - Steph Houghton

    Former England goalkeeper Rachel Brown-Finnis

    BBC Radio 5 live

"We've seen this set piece three or four times from Norway in this game already. The delivery, an in-swinging corner was spot on. An unconventional tactic to make the change on a corner, but that's not why they conceded. It was so hard to defend against. And considering the run of play, in the second half so far especially, I'm not surprised."

  67. GOAL

Norway 1-0 England - Sloveig Gulbrandsen

    Solveig Gulbrandsen celebrates

England finally pay the price for giving away too many corners as the ball is sent in towards the near post and Solveig Gulbrandsen is there to direct the ball into the net off the underside of the bar with a header. There's time, but a big response needed from England now. Got to go for it.

  78. Post update

    Norway 0-0 England

    Toni Duggan

Norway are finding it all too easy to close down Toni Duggan, who is far too isolated in attack. Maybe the pace of Eni Aluko is needed alongside her to give the defence something extra to think about?

  79. Text us on 81111

Mark Redcliffe: Think we will have to try and nab this on the break, not sure Kirby is right for that... Not got anything against her, but her inexperience could be costly in the final third - Eni Aluko would prove more effective I think.

Hammy, Northern Ireland: I've watched a few games at this world cup and still undecided as to the quality. At what level of the men's game would the England women hold their own?

England ease the pressure on themselves as they make a rare foray forward, Fran Kirby winning a corner as her shot is deflected for a corner. Norway struggle to clear, eventually smashing the ball against the back against the referee, who blows her whistle for an earlier foul on a Norway player in the area.

    One minute of added time.

"That is a let off for England. Lucy Bronze didn't put enough pace on the ball, it was too casual, but Karen Bardsley got her angles spot on and reacted well to the rebound. We do not want to gift Norway any chances.

"Toni Duggan has been feeding off scraps so far, up front for Mark Sampson's side. I'm no tactical genius but surely somebody more attacking needs to come on if there are to be changes at half-time."

  94. CLOSE!

    Norway 0-0 England

England are living dangerous as half-time approaches. Lucy Bronze sells Karen Bardsley short with an awful backpass and Ada Hegerberg is in, she has a fair shout for a penalty too as Bronze, trying to make amends, tries to wrestle her down to the ground in her desperation to get to the ball. The Norwegian stays on her feet and smashes a shot goalwards, but straight at Bardsley.

Moments earlier there was hesitation between Laura Bassett and Bardsley that almost caused problems for a very nervy England.

Half a chance for Norway as Isabell Herlovsen is left alone just outside the England area. A slightly fortuitous corner for England as a ball forward flicks off Marita Skammelsrud Lund's shoulder and behind. On the scoresheet in that friendly with Norway back in January 2014 was Eni Aluko, who is still waiting for her first goal at this year's Women's World Cup.

"It's nice to know I've got a goal against Norway," she told the Guardian. "But it does feel a long time ago. A lot's happened since then. There's been a lot of changes tactically and a lot of changes emotionally for us.

"But, as a forward, it always helps psychologically if you've scored against a team before. It would be brilliant to do it again. But we need to win this time."

Aluko, who starts on the bench today, also revealed in her BBC column that players have to adopt a poker face when told whether or not they have been selected.

"We are very good at putting on a poker face, being respectful of others in the squad and pretending it's all OK. But sometimes it's just not and some players obviously get frustrated," she said.

    England

Since losing to France in their opening game of the World Cup, England beat Mexico and Colombia to finish second in Group F and secure their place in the knockout stages.

Mark Sampson boasts an impressive record since he took over from Hope Powell in 2013, having won 16, lost five and drawn just two of his games in charge.

One of those draws came in his first game as England boss. Incidentally against Norway, when the two sides shared a 1-1 draw.

  166. One to watch

Norway forward Ada Hegerberg will be the player England will need to keep their eye on. The 19-year-old has scored 19 goals in 38 games since making her debut as a 16-year-old. She starts for Norway tonight.

    Norway v England (22:00 BST)

Mark Sampson has not been afraid to chop and change at the World Cup, using all 20 of his outfield players in the three games so far.

  172. England readying their weapons

    Norway v England (22:00 BST)

They may not have won a knockout game before, but England are actually bidding for a third successive quarter-final appearance at the Women's World Cup.

They lost to the United States at the last eight stage in 2007 and then France in 2011, but with the tournament having been expanded from 16 to 24 teams, they now have an extra round to navigate, and Mark Sampson is feeling confident of his side's chances.

"We are building a real sense of momentum emotionally and in our results and performances so we can play them confidently and look to be positive," he said. "Norway drew 1-1 with the best team in the tournament [Germany] in the group stage, but we are playing well and have weapons to potentially hurt them."

    England

Hello! Welcome to our coverage of England's last-16 match with Norway at the Women's World Cup

Unsurprisingly, Bjorge Lillelien's memorable words have already been called upon ahead of the encounter, with Norwegian newspaper VG Sporten asking if Mark Sampson's team "are ready for a hell of a beating" in Ottawa.

Norway probably have every right to feel confident, being veterans of seven World Cups and winners of the tournament in 1995, but the Lionesses have been improving with each game in Canada, recording back-to-back wins to reach the knockout stage.

They also have a significant carrot on the end of the stick - the chance to win a knockout game at a World Cup finals for the first time in their history.

  179. Will anyone be in for a hell of a beating?

    England Norway

"Lord Nelson, Lord Beaverbrook, Sir Winston Churchill, Sir Anthony Eden, Clement Attlee, Henry Cooper, Lady Diana, Maggie Thatcher, can you hear me? Your boys took a hell of a beating!"

When Norwegian commentator Bjorge Lillelien uttered the above words as Norway beat England in 1981, he probably did not expect it would still be sparking parodies more than 30 years later.

That it is, though, with the Norwegian press taunting England's women's team in the build up their World Cup last 16 meeting with Norway tonight.

But will Mark Sampson's side have the last laugh?
