    Paraguay beat Brazil on penalties

Paraguay will celebrate, while Brazil will again be left to ask questions about what has happened to its national team.

The fact Neymar was missing didn't help the Selecao but they lacked the kind of quality and style they have been associated with in the past.

For the time being, it's time to go but you can follow more live football action by clicking here for a live commentary on England v Canada at the Women's World Cup.

  2. Post update

    Paraguay beat Brazil on penalties

Right, so the Ciopa America semi-final line-up is:

    Chile v Peru

    Argentina v Paraguay

  3. Post update

    Paraguay beat Brazil on penalties

    Derlis Gonzalez

Derlis Gonzalez will get plenty of the headlines for his part in Paraguay's success and deservedly so.

He kept his cool to slot in the penalty which brought his side deservedly level before scoring the decisive spot-kick in the shoot-out to secure his side's progress.

  4. Post update

    Paraguay beat Brazil on penalties

Brazil cannot have much cause for complaint after losing on penalties. Robinho had given them the early lead but rather than going and trying to build on that lead they sat back too much.

Paraguay were allowed to put pressure on the Selecao and it eventually paid off with Derlis Gonzalez getting the equaliser.

Brazil struggled in the final third for most of the night and paid the price.

  5. Post update

    Paraguay beat Brazil on penalties

    Paraguay celebrate beating Brazil

Paraguay's players are celebrating as it's agony again for Brazil. La Albirroja beat the Selecao on penalties four years ago and have repeated the trick.

They will now face Argentina in the semi-finals.

  6. SCORES!

Brazil 3-4 Paraguay - Derlis Gonzalez

A spot-kick with power and placement sends Paraguay through.

  7. SCORES!

Brazil 3-3 Paraguay - Philippe Coutinho

Low and hard as he sends the keeper the wrong way.

  8. OVER!

Brazil 2-3 Paraguay - Roque Santa Cruz

Another one which goes well over.

  9. OVER!

Brazil 2-3 Paraguay - Douglas Costa

A bad, bad miss as it goes over the crossbar.

  10. SCORES!

Brazil 2-3 Paraguay - Raul Bobadilla

High into the top corner. No chance for keeper Jefferson.

  11. SCORES!

    Brazil 2-2 Paraguay - Miranda

Coolly sidefooted to the keeper's left.

  12. SCORES!

Brazil 1-2 Paraguay - Victor Caceres

Powered down the centre of the goal.

  13. WIDE!

Brazil 1-1 Paraguay - Everton Ribeiro

After an extravagant run-up, he drags his low shot wide of the post.

  14. SCORES!

Brazil 1-1 Paraguay - Osvaldo Martinez

He again goes for power and Jefferson had no chance.

  15. SCORES!

    Brazil 1-0 Paraguay - Fernandinho

He goes for power over placement and Paraguay keeper Justo Villar gets a touch but can't keep it out.

  16. PENALTY SHOOT-OUT

    Brazil 1-1 Paraguay

Just to remind you, the winners will face Argentina, who themselves won a penalty shoot-out against Colombia last night with Carlos Tevez getting the winner.

  17. PENALTY SHOOT-OUT

    Brazil 1-1 Paraguay

These two teams were involved in a penalty shoot-out four years ago at the same stage of the Copa America and Paraguay won 2-0. Brazil failed to score any of their spot-kicks.

Can Brazil avenge that loss or will Paraguay again prevail? Let's see...

  18. FULL-TIME

    Brazil 1-1 Paraguay

    A penalty shoot-out it is.

  19. Post update

    Brazil 1-1 Paraguay

Paraguay have a free-kick from their right flank but nothing comes of it as Brazil clear and the referee gives a free-kick for a foul by Roque Santa Cruz.

  20. Post update

    Brazil 1-1 Paraguay

There will be three added minutes.

  21. SUBSTITUTION

    Brazil 1-1 Paraguay

Everton Ribeiro comes on for Robinho, who gave Brazil the lead earlier on.

  22. Text us on 81111

For a true Brazilian 'o' you have to look at Edmundo. Outrageously gifted, outrageously unbalanced. Still remember his goal against Man Utd in the world club cup...magical! Matt, Edinburgh

  23. Post update

    Brazil 1-1 Paraguay

Just going back to Liverpool's new signing Roberto Firmino. The Brazil playmaker was substituted just before Paraguay's equaliser after a rather anonymous game. In his defence, he was playing in a more advanced striker role.

  24. Post update

    Brazil 1-1 Paraguay

Philippe Coutinho tries to curl a shot in from the right and Paraguay keeper Justo Villar nervously blocks the ball away before a Dani Alves free-kick goes wide of his goal.

  25. Post update

    Brazil 1-1 Paraguay

Brazil's Jefferson is by far the busier of the two keepers. He fends away a well-struck Derlis Gonzalez shot as Paraguay almost take advantage of a swift counter-attack.

    Brazil 1-1 Paraguay

    S. Rahman: That's why Thiago Silva isn't world class. Seen him do that loads of times

  27. SUBSTITUTION

    Brazil 1-1 Paraguay

Paraguay midfielder Eduardo Aranda comes off and is replaced by Osvaldo Martinez.

  28. Post update

    Brazil 1-1 Paraguay

Paraguay look like the most likely winners at the moment as Brazil's threat has been minimal since their goal. If it does stay like this then the match will go straight to penalties with no extra-time.

  29. SUBSTITUTION

    Brazil 1-1 Paraguay

Paraguay boss Ramon Diaz brings on Raul Bobadilla for Nelson Valdez.

  30. GOAL

Brazil 1-1 Paraguay - Derlis Gonzalez (Pen)

    Derlis Gonzalez celebrates

Brazil keeper Jefferson dives the right way but the penalty from Derlis Gonzalez is too precise as it finds the bottom corner of the net.

  31. PENALTY TO PARAGUAY

    Brazil 1-0 Paraguay

Thiago Silva has a moment of madness as the PSG defender handballs needlessly in the box! Spot-kick...

  32. SUBSTITUTION

    Brazil 1-0 Paraguay

Roberto Firmino's game has come to an end as he is hauled off for Diego Tardelli.

  33. Post update

    Brazil 1-0 Paraguay

BBC World Service's Richard Padula at the Estadio Municipal: "The air is thick with wood-smoke as the fans (mostly Chilean) begin to whistle the players. Arguably the dullest game of the tournament so far. They should put a re-run of Argentina v Colombia on the big screen."

  34. Post update

    Brazil 1-0 Paraguay

Brazil try to catch Paraguay out on the counter-attack. Roberto Firmino leads the charge but he can't apply the finishing ball as a Paraguay defender cuts out his cross.

  35. Post update

    Brazil 1-0 Paraguay

Another scare for Brazil. I've had my doubts about Brazil keeper Jefferson but he's just pulled off a quality save to maintain his side's lead.

Paraguay defender Paulo Da Silva meets a corner with a powerful header and Jefferson gets down low to palm the ball away.

  36. SUBSTITUTION

    Brazil 1-0 Paraguay

That's it for Willian. The Brazil midfielder is replaced by Douglas Costa as Dunga makes the first substitution of the match.

  37. Not for me...

    Brazil 1-0 Paraguay

BBC World Service's Richard Padula at the Estadio Municipal: "Slightly off-topic but here in Chile Gonzalo Jara's wandering finger is still making headlines.

"A Chilean restaurant aptly called "The Hole" has created a dish to honour the player who took man-to-man market to the next level in the game against Uruguay.

"Called the "Great Super Jara", it contains: two different types of pork, fresh cheese, boiled egg, olives, and a 'finger' made from cow's tongue!

"Good value too. 9,900 pesos for a serving which feeds four people."

  38. Post update

    Brazil 1-0 Paraguay

Paraguay are stepping up the urgency and intensity. Brazil keeper Jefferson has to keep out a surprise free-kick to his near post before he watches a Nelson Valdez header go just over.

  39. Post update

    Brazil 1-0 Paraguay

Edgar Benitez has been Paraguay's main threat on the left flank and his pace causes right-back Dani Alves more problems, with the Brazil player fouling him and picking up a yellow in the process.

  40. Post update

    Brazil 1-0 Paraguay

Brazil midfielder Willian gets a shove in the back from Pablo Aguilar as he tries to shield the ball before it goes out of play. There's nothing doing for the Chelsea player as he appeals for a free-kick with the assistant referee giving Paraguay a throw-in.

  41. Post update

    Brazil 1-0 Paraguay

Can Paraguay mount a comeback against Brazil? We'll find out as the second half is under way.

  42. HALF-TIME

    Brazil 1-0 Paraguay

    Robinho

Robinho's goal currently separates the two sides and he might feel he's exorcised a few demons with his effort.

He missed his penalty in the shootout against Paraguay as Brazil were knocked out of the Copa America four years ago today.

Robinho was not alone though, as Selecao failed to score any of their spot-kicks.

  43. HALF-TIME

    Brazil 1-0 Paraguay

A bit of half-time shirt swapping going on. Never a good thing in my book but Brazil goalscorer Robinho and Paraguay striker Roque Santa Cruz - ex-team-mates from their Manchester City days - swap shirts. I hope they got spares in the dressing room.

John McEnerney: 7 of that super 1970 team names ended in an O, what a team they were led by Carlos Alberto who scored that super super goal

David Angus: Clodoaldo with all the fancy tricks before Carlos Alberto fired the 4th in the '70 final. Great O's

  45. HALF-TIME

    Brazil 1-0 Paraguay

Brazil took their foot off the pedal after taking the lead but, despite some Paraguay applying pressure, La Albirroja were limited to long range shots at best.

So far so good for that Brazil v Argentina semi.

  46. Post update

    Brazil 1-0 Paraguay

If Brazil carry on looking as solid at the back as they do at the moment then David Luiz might have to get used to being on the bench for Selecao. Centre-backs Thiago Silva and Miranda have soaked up Paraguay's threat.

  47. 'We don't care about criticism'

    Brazil 1-0 Paraguay

BBC World Service's Richard Padula at the Estadio Municipal: "We spoke to Brazil's Felipe Luis before the game about the criticism the team has received. He told us:

"We don't care what the press say, you know Brazil is the biggest national team so there's a lot of pressure. Of course people are going to criticise a lot until we are Champions".

  48. Post update

    Brazil 1-0 Paraguay

Paraguay are starting to apply some pressure again as they hound the Brazil defenders in possession and pen their rivals back but Brazil are holding firm for the time being.

  49. Post update

    Brazil 1-0 Paraguay

Paraguay striker Roque Santa Cruz turns on goal and skims an angled shot wide from 20 yards as his side look like mounting a threat again.

  50. Join the debate at #bbcfootball

John McEnerney: Jairzinho some player, don't think a dozen Brazilian O's could help David "Sideshow Bob" Luiz though - he's brutal

  51. Post update

    Brazil 1-0 Paraguay

The goal seems to have winded Paraguay as they are not carrying the same threat as the early stages. They do earn two corners in quick succession but nothing comes of them.

  52. YELLOW CARD

    Brazil 1-0 Paraguay

The first yellow of the night might make Chelsea fans wince. Blues left-back Filipe Luis has his run unceremoniously ended by Paraguay's Bruno Valdez, whose challenge is crude and late.

  53. Post update

    Brazil 1-0 Paraguay

BBC World Service's Richard Padula at the Estadio Municipal: "So, we'll have no repeat of the 2011 Copa America when these two teams met in the quarter-finals and after a goalless draw Paraguay won on penalties. Brazil missed all their spot-kicks (blaming the crumbling turf) as Paraguay won the shoot out 2-0.

"Paraguay went on to reach the final without winning game. It's looking like a very different story today, much to the delight of a small but lively group of Brazilian fans."

  54. Post update

    Brazil 1-0 Paraguay

Brazil playmaker Roberto Firmino usually supplies the ammunition to strikers but he's playing in a more advanced position today as his side have plenty of attacking midfielders in their starting line-up but no out-and-out striker.

  55. GOAL

    Brazil 1-0 Paraguay - Robinho

    Robinho scores

Nice move by Selecao to take the lead. Plenty of players involved before Dani Alves plays in a low cross from the right, Roberto Firmino lets it go and Robinho slots in for his first competitive goal since 2010.

    Game of 'O'- pinions

Kashif Khan: Speaking of great 'O's in Brazilian football, can you mention Bebeto? A great player who never gets mentioned for some reason!

Famous Brazilian O's? How could you miss the greatest of them all - the gifted Paulinho! Paul from Battersea.

  57. Post update

    Brazil 0-0 Paraguay

Paraguay have settled. Edgar Benitez races past Brazil right-back Dani Alves and plays in a cross which keeper Jefferson palms against Roque Santa Cruz and out of play.

  58. Post update

    Brazil 0-0 Paraguay

Do Paraguay fear Roberto Firmino? It would appear so as the new Liverpool signing is fouled on the right flank to earn Selecao a free-kick. Robinho waste the set piece as he overhits his ball into the area.

  59. Post update

    Brazil 0-0 Paraguay

  60. Copa arrives in Concepcion

    Brazil 0-0 Paraguay

BBC World Service's Richard Padula at the Estadio Municipal: "The Copa America finally arrives in the university city of Concepcion. A brief look around the downtown area suggest things haven't changed much since 1982.

"The stadium is surrounded by narrow residential streets - with the local residents enjoying barbecues in their front gardens. Seems like most of the fans are locals...wearing Chile shirts, enjoying the first Copa match to be played in Concepcion. A few Brazilian flags dotted around the stadium - but it very much feels like a Chile match."

  61. Post update

    Brazil 0-0 Paraguay

Philippe Coutinho lets fly with a well struck 25-yarder which Paraguay keeper Justo Villar has to palm over for a corner, which La Albirroja clear.

  62. We're under way

    Brazil 0-0 Paraguay

Right, enough of the pre-match build-up. The game has kicked off so let's get down to the nitty gritty of the actual action.

  63. Where's Neymar?

    Brazil v Paraguay (22:30 BST)

    Neymar

Just in case you were wondering where Brazil's star player Neymar is, well his tournament was over after two games.

He was banned for four matches after getting a yellow card, a straight red and then showering the referee with abuse during and the group game defeat by Colombia.

The 23-year-old Barcelona forward watched Brazil beat Venezuela from the stands and, while he might still be in Chile, he can't help his side on the pitch.

  64. Argentina await winners

    Brazil v Paraguay (22:30 BST)

Argentina forward Carlos Tevez celebrates his side's success over Colombia

The winners of Brazil v Paraguay will play Argentina in the semi-finals after they beat Colombia on penalties.

Carlos Tevez got the winning spot-kick and you can watch highlights here. It's worth it just to see a couple of Colombia's misses in the shoot-out - Chris Waddle would be proud.

The prospect of a Brazil-Argentina semi sounds mouth watering but Paraguay will have plenty to say about that.

  65. A tough nut to crack

    Paraguay
  66. Can Paraguay repeat Brazil upset?

    Brazil 0-0 Paraguay

Paraguay celebrate beating Brazil in the 2011 Copa America

If you think Brazil are favourites you might want to think again.

Four years ago in the same tournament the two teams met at the same stage and Paraguay came out on top after a penalty shoot-out, which they won 2-0 after Brazil, amazingly, failed to score a single penalty.

Brazil's O Globo newspaper website described their side's performance as the "worst football I've seen in the past few decades". Let's hope for a bit better this time eh...

  67. All eyes on Firmino

    Brazil v Paraguay (22:30 BST)

    Roberto Firmino

Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino are now Liverpool team-mates, with the latter having signed for the Reds from Hoffenheim on a five-year deal for a deal which could be worth about £29m.

The move was confirmed three days ago and suffice to say there will be a few more eyes on the 23-year-old tonight.

He scored the winner for Brazil in a 2-1 victory over Venezuela on Sunday and he again starts.

  68. LINE-UPS

    Brazil v Paraguay (22:30 BST)

Brazil XI: Jefferson, Dani Alves, Thiago Silva, Miranda, Luis, Fernandinho, Elias, Willian, Coutinho, Robinho, Firmino.

Paraguay XI: Villar, Pablo Aguilar, Da Silva, Valdez, Piris, Gonzalez, Victor Caceres, Aranda, Haedo Valdez, Santa Cruz, Benitez.

    Referee: Andres Cunha (Uruguay)

  69. TEAM NEWS

    Brazil v Paraguay (22:30 BST)

Talking about team news, Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino both start for Brazil, along with Robinho, as coach Dunga keeps the same side which beat Venezuela last time out. Centre-back David Luiz has to settle for a place on the bench again as Thiago Silva and Miranda get the nod ahead of him.

Paraguay drew with Uruguay in their last game and coach Ramon Diaz makes four changes, including drafting former Blackburn and Manchester City striker Roque Santa Cruz into the starting line-up.

  70. Brazil's current O's

    Brazil v Paraguay (22:30 BST)

The current Brazil side don't have the kind of samba magic of their more illustrious predecessors, especially without the suspended Neymar, but two of the side's newer O's hoping to change that will be Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino.

They will be under the spotlight tonight in the Copa America quarter-final against Paraguay so shall we see how they do? Yes, let's...

Philippe Coutinho (left) and Roberto Firmino
  71. Brazil's famous O's
