Jeremain Lens has said Dick Advocaat was a big part of Sunderland's lure, with the Dutchman having worked with his compatriot at AZ Alkmaar and PSV.
The £8m signing from Dynamo Kiev described his spell in war-torn Ukraine as a “horrible period” despite completing a domestic double with the club.
Whatever the results on the pitch for Sunderland, it will all pale in comparison to Ukraine for the Dutchman.

14:47Ever wondered how many games your team have played during your lifetime? Goals scored? Trophies won? Managers employed?
BBC Sport's new feature My Premier League Life allows fans to discover all of this and more about their favourite current Premier League club.
Here's what former Leicester striker Gary Lineker's might look like:
During the 54 years Lineker has been on earth, Leicester have scored 3,726 goals, of which Gary can claim 103 - the sixth highest in the club's history.
The first Leicester game after his birth was a 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest in the old First Division, on 3 December 1960.
Just 18 years later, Lineker was making his debut for the Foxes.
Leicester have beaten Birmingham most often during Gary's life, while their average attendance has soared from a record low of 4,069 in 1975-76 to an all-time high of 31,698 in 2014-15.

Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer"Was Dick Advocaat just the perfect quick fix for a team in trouble or can the veteran Dutch coach really shape a brighter future on Wearside? We are about to find out.
"He was in tears when they survived last season. He will hope not to be reduced to tears again but it is shaping up as another season of stress at the Stadium of Light.
"Jeremain Lens, an £8.5m signing from Dynamo Kiev will add danger but Younes Kaboul may do little to settle Advocaat's nerves. The former Spurs defender has talent - but also makes a lot of mistakes.
"Advocaat still needs further attacking reinforcements, especially with Connor Wickham leaving for Crystal Palace. They should avoid relegation but I am not expecting too much excitement."
Phil's prediction: 17th
