    Man Utd 0-0 Liverpool

Liverpool's best moment comes on the counter as Emre Can breaks forwards well and plays it through to Christian Benteke - but he's offside.

It's a battle of two ineffective lone Belgian forwards so far. Not exactly compelling.

Giannina Caraceni: Happy with Liverpool so far. For all their bother, United have done nothing yet. I'm liking how often we put them on the floor too.

Sanj: He's just a big lump ain't he? At least Fellaini puts his body about but Benteke's looked useless so far.

Romy's Dad: If Fellaini is the answer, I'm not sure what the question is...

David De Gea is on for a very easy clean-sheet bonus so far. Liverpool have had 37% possession.

Not a shot on goal yet.

Are you watching the Old Trafford action from far away?

Ian Cary:  Watching in San Francisco and I cannot fathom how we use Fellaini as a striker. Mind blown.

Paul lummis:  Watching from Davis, California. So far I wish that I was still asleep...

Ben Templar:  Watching in Shanghai. With no out-and-out strikers on the pitch, despite Liverpool's shaky defence I can't see goals for United.

Full marks for ambition from Memphis Depay as he shoots from all of 40 yards. But it's well off target.

Apropos of nothing, a former Manchester United number seven scored FIVE earlier on today...

Mark very much channeling the English way there. Get rid!

Liverpool play a high line, confident of playing Maroune Fellaini offside. And they are right to be, the Belgian galloping into space excitedly only to see the flag raised.

Mark, Glastonbury: Please, Brendan. This is embarrassing. Stop telling your goalie and defenders to try to pass it. Tell them to defend and clear their lines. Know your limitations.

Emre Can with a Phil Neville stepover and run into the box before he checks back and loses the ball. Nathaniel Clyne then tries a first-time strike from 30 yards - he's capable - but drags it well off target.

Still Manchester United dominate possession as Liverpool leave Christian Benteke further and further adrift up front on his own. He'll need to communicate by semaphore if the midfield gets any deeper.

Craig M Evans:  Fellaini is not a striker, simple as. He can head the ball yes but that is all. He doesn't have that striker's instinct.

Ash:  This has to be the worst centre-back pairing I've seen in a Liverpool side.

Jake Saunders:  I'm pretty sure if you asked Brendan Rodgers right now how Liverpool were doing he'd say they were "showing outstanding character"...

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

"Plenty of applause for his players from Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers in his technical area - but slightly difficult to see why at this stage. Manchester United have looked much more assured in possession only for a couple of heavy touches from Marouane Fellaini to let them down in promising positions."

I'd be interested in a viewpoint from abroad so let me know if you are watching/reading from afar.

But the global audience tuning in to the opening 15 minutes of this one can't be overly impressed. It's a poor standard of football on display thus far.

Well played Matteo Darmian. The Italian right-back scuttles forwards, beats Joe Gomez easily and cuts back a dangerous low cross. Without labouring the point, it's the sort of cross Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie or Dimitar Berbatov may have taken on the volley.

Instead, Maroune Fellaini's touch is effectively a clearance.

"The balance of United's squad is not right. You cannot spend a quarter of a billion pounds on a team and have Fellaini as your number nine."
