And that's your lot from Villa Park today.

Here's a quick recap of some of the key bits from new Villa boss Dean Smith and chief executive Christian Purslow:

    • Smith believes the club can be promoted this season and that it "has to be the aim" to get the club up to the Premier League
    • Purslow believes Smith and assistant coach John Terry will be "an excellent fit", while Smith thinks Terry's input will be "very important"
    • Despite Villa being the team he supports, Smith says the decision to come to Villa Park was a "rational not emotional" one and he had to give serious thought to leaving Brentford.
    • Purslow says the appointments of Smith, Terry and sporting director Jesus Garcia Pitarch can help to build "a truly excellent football club".

Smith's tenure as Villa manager will begin on Saturday with a home match against Swansea City and you'll be able to keep across that game and all the other EFL action in our live text.

  2. 'I was never good enough to play for Villa'published at 16:28 British Summer Time 15 October 2018

Dean Smith is asked again about what it means to him - a boyhood Villa fan - to be taking the top job.

"I suppose when I was a kid I wanted to play for Aston Villa, but I was never good enough and ended up in the lower leagues.

"So the next best thing is you become the head coach.

"I'm not gonna go dream come true, but it's certainly something I'm looking forward to doing.

"The timing was probably tough because my wife had an operation last week, so I probably put her through some stress."

  3. Not a no-brainer - Smithpublished at 16:27 British Summer Time 15 October 2018

Asked whether coming to manage the club he supports Smith admits that it was not a "no-brainer".

"I had to give it some thought. Brentford had been a great football club to work for," he said.

"I had to speak to Christian and make sure there was a project in place that was going to make me progress as a coach and get better."

On the appointment of Richard O'Kelly Smith added: "Richard has been with me at my last two clubs and he and John (Terry) will be involved in everything.

"I have an open door policy and I will take advice and opinions but I will make decisions."

  4. 'I've earned this seat'published at 16:24 British Summer Time 15 October 2018

Next up Dean Smith is asked about his history of being an Aston Villa fan, and how it might have impacted on him taking the job.

"Obviously I grew up not far down the road from here, so I think a lot of the local people are really pleased a local lad is sat in this seat.

"I try to remind them that I've actually earned this seat - I've done my apprenticeship and I'm looking forward to it.

"I think I handle the expectation and stress quite well - a lot of my friends have already said I've been quite steady throughout this process and it's friends and family who've been emotional."

  5. New direction good for Villa - Purslowpublished at 16:21 British Summer Time 15 October 2018

Chief executive Christian Purslow is asked about how he has found his first 30 days in his new role.

"We now have a set-up that can build from the top down a truly excellent football club," he said.

"You have to make excellent appointments to be successful and that is what we have done with getting Dean Smith in as head coach.

"It has been a very hectic 30 days in post but I think we are moving in the right direction.

"We have a clean balance sheet and we therefore have a strong financial and management base."

  6. Terry and Smith 'an excellent fit'published at 16:19 British Summer Time 15 October 2018

Villa chief executive Christian Purslow is asked more about the appointment of John Terry, alongside Dean Smith.

"It's obvious that having been at Aston Villa last year in a playing capacity John has really, I think, understood what Aston Villa is all about and has familiarised himself with all aspects of the club.

"I think in that sense he's going to help Dean very much in the early days hit the ground running.

"It felt to us like an excellent fit."

  7. Promotion the aim this season - Smithpublished at 16:17 British Summer Time 15 October 2018

Aston Villa are 15th in the table after a run of just three runs from their opening 12 games but Smith is confident that they can turn their fortunes around and win promotion this season.

"The stats are not good at the moment, that's why I am sat here, but it's a realistic aim to get promoted this season. It has to be the aim," he said.

"This is as even as I have seen this league. At the moment I do not see any team that is going to run away it and there's not an insurmountable gap between us and the top six."

Smith's tenure will begin with a home game against Swansea on Saturday.

It will be the first game since the death of former chairman Doug Ellis last week and Smith said his loss will be felt keenly by everyone.

"We all felt the loss of Doug. My dad used to show him to his seat," he said.

"There'll be a great atmosphere at the stadium and I'm very aware of how good their home record is.

"We want to make this a fortress and we want to make it a place that is hard for other clubs to come to."

  8. 'We're determined to back new management team'published at 16:17 British Summer Time 15 October 2018

Christian Purslow is quizzed about the EFL's Profitability and Sustainability rules, previously known as financial fair play.

Is he confident that Villa will stay within the threshold?

"I'm not just confident, I'm highly respectful.

"We're highly respectful of them and of course are navigating within those rules.

"It changes nothing - we are determined to back our new management team in improving this squad."

  9. 'He's committed to a playing style'published at 16:14 British Summer Time 15 October 2018

Villa chief executive Christian Purslow is then asked why Dean Smith was the right man for the job.

"He's hugely experienced in English football, and in the Championship.

"He has dedicated his career to a very recognisable, attractive playing style and he's committed to that playing style through thick and thin."

  11. 'Terry very important'published at 16:11 British Summer Time 15 October 2018

Dean Smith is asked about the role of ex-England and Chelsea captain John Terry, who was appointed as his assistant.

    "He's very important.

"John's got a wealth of experience, we all know he's played at the top level of the game and he's always been interested in coaching.

"He knows the football club, he knows the players and he knows the expectations at the football club as well."

  12. Smith happy with squad qualitypublished at 16:10 British Summer Time 15 October 2018

After leading his first coaching session at the club this morning Smith says he is very happy with what he has found at Villa Park.

"It's a very good squad," he said.

"The quality of the players is very high and they want to learn and they want to get better."

On Steve Bruce's sacking: "I'm sad for Steve. He was one game away from being in the Premier League this season."

  13. 'Not an emotional decision' to come to Villapublished at 16:07 British Summer Time 15 October 2018

First up Dean Smith is asked how much it means to him to be appointed manager of the club he supported as a child.

"It means quite a lot due to my allegiances as a child and my father working here for 25 years," Smith said.

"This wasn't an emotional decision, this was a rational decision."

  14. Going it alonepublished at 16:05 British Summer Time 15 October 2018

There has been a change of plan from the Villa end and boss Dean Smith will be joined by chief executive Christian Purlsow on the top table.

Assistant John Terry will be speaking to BBC Radio 5 live later today.

    And we are under way.

  15. Smith not a 'merry-go-round manager'published at 16:00 British Summer Time 15 October 2018

Plenty of pundits have given opinions on the appointment in recent days - including former Villa striker Garry Thompson - who told BBC WM why he's happy with Dean Smith and John Terry.

"Dean Smith has worked wonders at clubs he's been at - give him time and this thing will be all right.

    "He's a progressive manager - he's young, he's hungry, he's not one of the merry-go-round managers.

"John Terry knows the players, he's played with them, he knows the character of the boys - in a way he will perform a very good function.

"The combination of those two does seem kind of strange because if they don't even know each other - as has been reported - you wonder how they're going to get along."

This will be John Terry's first foray into coaching.

The former Chelsea and England man announced his retirement from playing earlier this month.

Terry finished his career with a one-season spell at Villa Park that ended in disappointment when they fell to a 1-0 defeat by Fulham in the Championship play-off final in May.

After his appointment was announced last week he said: "Looking forward to my first steps in coaching and returning to a club where I have great memories."

Dean Smith is not the first manager to be appointed the main man at the club he supports.

Villa fans and Smith alike will be hoping his spell at Villa Park proves to be more like Chris Wilder's at Sheffield United than Alan Shearer's at Newcastle United.

BBC Sport took a look at how a few other supporter-managers have fared in recent years and, while we wait for the news conference to start, you can read that here.

It's just under two weeks since Steve Bruce's spell as Aston Villa manager was brought to an end after a 3-3 draw with Preston, that saw an irate fan throw a cabbage at him.

Last week the Championship club turned to Brentford boss, and Villa fan, Dean Smith, and former Villa defender John Terry to lead them back to the Premier League.

The duo are speaking to the media for the first time at 16:00 BST and we'll bring you all the best bits right here.
