In 2012, Wim Jonk told the Ajax board they would laugh at a reluctance to invest an extra 200,000 euros into the club's academy because they would have 200m euros sitting in the bank five years later.

Jonk's promise took a little longer to deliver but the Eredivisie champions have surpassed that figure in the past two summers alone by selling on their best young talent, with the big-money departures of Matthijs de Ligt to Juventus and Frenkie de Jong to Barcelona accounting for a large chunk of that windfall.

Now the talented duo will be crucial to the Netherlands' chances of winning a first major tournament since their European Championship success in 1988.

Head-to-head meetings

This is the first meeting between the Netherlands and Ukraine at a major tournament.

The Netherlands are unbeaten in the two previous encounters - both friendlies - winning 3-0 in 2008 before a 1-1 draw in 2010.

Redemption for Frank de Boer?

For the coach with the shortest reign in Premier League history, a shot at redemption may come just 20 miles from the scene of his managerial low.

Frank de Boer's Crystal Palace side failed to win any of their four top-flight games or score a goal during his 77 days in charge at Selhurst Park and he was called the "worst manager" in the competition's history during a spat with Jose Mourinho.

But four years after his Palace exit, the 51-year-old will lead the Netherlands into their first major tournament since 2014 and would undoubtedly silence any critics if his side were to step out at Wembley for the European Championship final on 11 July.

What are Ukraine's chances?

Ukraine won their first game against Sweden at Euro 2012 but have lost all five since.

Only Yugoslavia, with six defeats between 1968 and 1984, have had a longer losing run at the tournament.

Ukraine's goalless run of five matches at the Euros is also a tournament record.

They have failed to reach the knockout stage in their two previous appearances at the European Championship.

What are the Dutch chances?

Since the start of Euro 1988, the Netherlands have reached four European Championship semi-finals - a record bettered only by Germany (six).

Their 1-0 defeat by Denmark at Euro 2012 is their only defeat in their past 12 opening matches at major tournaments.

They failed to qualify for Euro 2016 and the 2018 World Cup of course.
