  1. 'Two heavyweights'published at 19:39 British Summer Time 6 July 2021

    Italy v Spain (20:00 BST)

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker on BBC One

These are two heavyweights. Italy are on an incredible run 32 unbeaten matches and won the last 13 games. No Spinazzola will be a huge loss for them because he's been one of the best players of the tournament.

Let's hope we're in for a really really entertaining match.

  2. 'Midfield battle key'published at 19:38 British Summer Time 6 July 2021

    Italy v Spain (20:00 BST)

    Rio Ferdinand
Former England defender on BBC One

Spain have had the most possession in the tournament and that is expected but no-one really expected them to get this far.

They have exceeded expectations and it is huge test for them today, they need to control the game today, can they do it against an Italy team that also likes to control the game?

The midfield will be the key battle and the more interested thing today.

Some highlights of the coverage from Italy ahead of their semi-final with Spain:

Il Post: "Italy vs Spain never lies,” titles Il Post. "Germany and France may be Italy’s greatest football rivals, but Spain is the opponent with which we’ve clashed more often – and perhaps the one we’ve learned the most from…

"In 2008, the penalties victory against Italy was what kickstarted Spain’s memorable period of international success. At the time, Italy was world champion and the victory gave the Spanish the knowledge they could do big things.

"Roberto Mancini’s stated objective for tonight’s match is to win the tournament as redemption for the failure to qualify for the last World Cup.

Daily Il Sole 24 Ore encourages the Azzurri to “keep calm” and stay humble: “We have a hurdle ahead of us that won’t tolerate any distractions…

Victory against Spain isn’t guaranteed in the slightest. We better not let the splendid win against Belgium go to our heads… too many cheers, too much applause could eventually be detrimental.”

Peter Humfrey: We can all talk about how average Spain are but what about Italy. Didn't look anything special against Belgium and were lucky to hold their lead till the end. Came inches from being put out by Austria. Only put 1 past 10-man Wales Don't understand the hype.

  5. 'Attacking message from Spain'published at 19:32 British Summer Time 6 July 2021

    Italy v Spain (20:00 BST)

    Guillem Balague
Spanish football journalist on BBC Radio 5 Live

Eric Garcia playing means we don't want to play in our own box too often. It becomes a less strong centre back pairing, and it's about building from the back. It's an attacking message.

The fact there's no Morata is a very Johan Cruyff kind of decision we've been debating for the last few days. In front of Chiellini and Bonucci, these guys know him very well and they kill him against Atletico Madrid in 2019. So Luis Enrique has said 'ok, I won't play him then'. No centre forward will mean there's movement around Chiellini and Bonucci. Good idea.

Given how often they have faced each other it is of little surprise that that 2012 triumph for Spain was against Italy.

The Spanish team back then was something else.

  8. Portugal inspiration for Spain?published at 19:24 British Summer Time 6 July 2021

Spain's one win in five games in 90 minutes at Euro 2020 may seem poor for a big nation - but it is one more than Portugal had at this stage five years ago on their way to winning the tournament.

This is now the round that Portugal finally managed a win in 90 minutes, 2-0 against Wales.

And Spain, like Portugal five years ago, came through a last-16 tie by beating Croatia in extra time.

One more possible bit of inspiration for Spain - Portugal beat Euro 2016 hosts France in extra time in the final.

Spain's possible opponents in the final could be the hosts of the latter stages, England, at Wembley.

  10. 'There is rivalry but respect'published at 19:20 British Summer Time 6 July 2021

    Italy v Spain (20:00 BST)

    Guillem Balague
Spanish football journalist on BBC Radio 5 Live

I was on the train on my way here and it was either Spanish fans or Italian fans, not necessarily Italian or Spanish. There were a lot of English people supporting either one or the other because they have a friend or they are half Spanish or whatever. The atmosphere was good.

We sang our song - we have only one, they've got more than one so they beat us there quite clearly. But we sang very loudly so that balances it out. There is rivalry but respect.

  12. Losing Spinazzola not a 'critical blow'published at 19:16 British Summer Time 6 July 2021

    Italy v Spain (20:00 BST)

    James Horncastle
    European football writer

Leonardo Spinazzola has been one of players of the tournament, that left hand side for Italy is so strong. It will be difficult to replicate the same dynamic without him but Emerson Palmieri played the most in the qualifiers because Spinazzola was often injured. That has followed him in his career which is why some people were surprised to see him come out like this in this tournament.

It won't be the same without him but it's not the critical blow you might expect. Emerson hasn't had much game time for Chelsea but he does a similar job to Spinazzola anyway.

    Italy v Spain (20:00 BST)

Chelsea legend Gianluca Vialli is pulling off a white flatcap like I could only dream of as he strolls around the Wembley pitch.

Vialli is delegation chief of the Italian national side and Roberto Mancini has been full of praise for his influence on the players.

The Italy boss said: “There’s been an excellent rapport among everyone, between the players and the staff, and Gianluca Vialli is now getting on a bit! So we’re quite happy to listen to him when he speaks up.”

  18. 'How not to get to a semi-final'published at 19:07 British Summer Time 6 July 2021

    Italy v Spain (20:00 BST)

    Guillem Balague
Spanish football journalist on BBC Radio 5 Live

It was how not to get to the semi-finals wasn't it (for Spain)? Just get a goalkeeper to score in his own goal, and miss two penalties, get 3-1 against Croatia with 10 minutes to go and then concede two more goals, a goalscorer that doesn't score enough, defenders that don't defend well. Then you get to Wembley and you turn right when you should turn left and you don't get to Wembley on time. That's basically how it goes at the moment.

If pre-match is anything to go by then the atmosphere inside Wembley is going to be superb. Both sets of fans in great spirits and making plenty of noise.
