You've got to take that on the chin that is part and parcel of the game. these young players will grow from it. I was told when I lost big, big finals to watch it, you won't like the taste but you will grow through it.

We are asking a lot of these players. There were some outstanding performances tonight. I thought Harry Maguire was outstanding.

But Italy were confident on the ball even when they were losing the game. Those are the lessons you learn.

We could have been more positive in this game. Look at Mancini. First half we looked more comfortable. They go in at half-time, they adjust things and dominate the game. That's because from a coaching perspective he's seen something and changed it. You've got to be good on both sides of the game.

You have to support them. There will be lessons to learn. It was a game that felt really tough. You realise at this level what it does to you.

After the first 20 minutes, we never really did enough.

It takes a lot to steady the ship when they came into this cauldron of fire and passion and support for this England side. I think it was that experience they had at the back that slowly started to shift the tie into their favour and they started to get a hold of the game and I think as Frank Lampard said they was the better side overall.

Harry Kane, There's a balance when you're playing as a forward. In the first half he was causing them problems because he was dropping deep, but he didn't have one touch in the 18-yard box for the whole game.

It's been a really tough night for him.

  9. 'It will hurt for the rest of our careers'published at 23:35 British Summer Time 11 July 2021

England captain Harry Kane speaking on BBC One:

"I couldn't have given more. The boys couldn't have given more. Penalties is the worst feeling in the world when you lose. It wasn't our night but it's been a fantastic tournament and we should hold our heads high. Of course it's going to hurt now. It's going to hurt for a while, but we're on the right track and we're building and hopefully we can progress from this next year."

On what went wrong: "We were playing against a very good side. We got off to the perfect start. Maybe dropped a little too deep sometimes. They had a lot of the ball. We looked fairly in control, they didn't create too many chances. They got their breakthrough from the set piece and after that was 50:50. In extra time we grew into the game and had a few hafd chances. Penalties is penalties. We went through a process. The boys did everything they could, it just wasn't our night.

On what was said to the players who missed penalties: "You've got to hold your heads high. It's been a fantastic tournament. Anyone can miss a penalty. We win together, we lose together. We'll learn and grow from it. Those boys will grow from it and it will give us more motivation for the world cup next year."

On how they will reflect on the tournament: "We should be extremely proud as a group of what we have achieved. We're all winners and want to win so it will probably hurt for a while and it will hurt for the rest of our careers, but that's football. We progressed well form Russia and now is about continuing that.

I think England can be proud of their performances throughout the tournament, but you have to look at the contrast of both teams.

England have gotten to the final and this will take a long long time for this team to get over this.

For the youngsters to say 'yes, I'll go on and take a penalty', you have to give them credit for that.

But it will be tough for them now. Hopefully, they will get over it.

People have put players on, maybe not as late as that, but towards the end. They come on as penalty takers because they are recognised. Rashford is a recognised penalty taker for Man Utd. The best players in the world miss penalties at times. The two boys would have said get me on there.

It's a big ask to put two players on with a few minutes to go and ask them to take penalties. It's big pressure when they've not kicked a ball. It's a big ask.

Mentally you have to get yourself right. You've not kicked a ball for a few hours.
