That came to a crescendo when it was revealed Effenberg was having an affair with Claudia Strunz, the wife of his former teammate Thomas Strunz, in the late 1990s.

The former East Germany captain has been excellent tonight but, surprisingly, he is leaving the field to be replaced by Stefan Effenberg.

A fiery, physically-imposing midfielder, 22-year-old Effenberg has earned some glowing reviews for his performances with Bayern Munich.
