After a cracking start to the campaign, this is the ultimate test for Terry Yorath’s side in their quest to qualify for Sweden next year – and end the long wait for a major Championship finals.

Germany field the vast majority of their World Cup winners of just 11 months ago and now, unified, are boosted further by the talented ex-East German trailblazer Matthias Sammer.

The Wales spine of Neville Southall, Kevin Ratcliffe, Barry Horne (who will surely have to shackle Lothar Matthaus) and Ian Rush hold the key. They will have to lead by example in what will be a packed, noisy atmosphere, if Wales are to cause a monumental upset.

Yes he played against West Germany in Italia 90, but it was for England.

Dean Saunders, the Derby County striker who is seemingly wanted by a host of First Division clubs, insists he is calm about newspaper reports linking him with a British record £3m move to Leeds United.

Saunders, who scored 17 goals for Derby last term, has been relaxing in camp this week between training sessions by playing golf with teammates Mark Hughes and Kevin Ratcliffe.

However, it seems increasingly likely that Saunders' future lies away from the Baseball Ground after Derby's relegation.

Potential title challengers Leeds are thought to be keen on Saunders, though they have also been linked to Southampton's Rodney Wallace and a French player no one has ever heard of named Eric Cantona.

New Aston Villa boss Ron Atkinson and Nottingham Forest manager Brian Clough are also known to be admirers of Saunders.

However, another intriguing possibility remains a switch to Anfield, with new Liverpool boss Graeme Souness keen to pair the Welshman with his international strike partner Ian Rush. Liverpool are already in talks with Saunders' Derby teammate, England defender Mark Wright.

"I just leave it all up to Derby,the chairman has said he is going to sell myself and Mark Wright, but nothing has happened since then," Saunders told BBC Wales reporter Bob Humphrys.

"I'll just leave them to get on with it. (Worrying about it) is not my job."

We can only live in hope!

This is the sixth official match for Germany since they were unified.

The squad is still largely dominated by the West German contingent who won Italia 1990 and that group of players have not tasted defeat in 16 matches, since a 2-1 loss to France some 16 months ago.

However, the squad, already so impressive, have received a real injection of quality since their victory in Rome over Argentina that sealed the World Cup.

VfB Stuttgart midfielder Matthias Sammer, 22, who is being described as the heir apparent to Lothar Matthaus, and is a starter in midfield for Berti Vogts' side.

Another East German player to look out for is midfielder Thomas Doll, a substitute today.

Doll is a hot property after impressing for Hamburg last season and Lazio are said to be days away from signing him in a multi-million pound deal with their original target, Tottenham midfielder Paul Gascoigne, set to miss most of the season after the injury he sustained in Spurs' FA Cup win over Nottingham Forest.

Wales manager Terry Yorath has not been holding back with his views about Germany in the build-up to this match.

Manager Berti Vogts makes three changes from the team which beat Belgium 1-0 in their previous qualifier.

Thomas Hassler, Thomas Doll and Dietmar Beiersdorfer miss out and in their place come two World Cup winners, Guido Buchwald and Jurgen Kohler, and Thomas Helmer.

Buchwald may appear in the team sheet as a midfielder but expect him, Helmer, Kohler, Berthold and the great Lothar Matthaus to all rotate between defence and midfield in this fluid system.

The impressive Matthias Sammer is one of the former East Germany players added to this World Cup-winning squad, while Jurgen Klinsmann and Rudi Voller form a prolific forward line.

Wales manager Terry Yorath names an unchanged team from the 0-0 friendly draw in Poland.

Eric Young has still not recovered from injury so Andy Melville, the 22-year-old Oxford centre-back, continues in his absence.

The former Swansea defender at least has the vast experience of captain Kevin Ratcliffe next to him, along with Mark Aizlewood.

There's familiarity in attack as well, with Mark Hughes and Dean Saunders in supporting roles behind Liverpool striker Ian Rush, who is five goals short of the Wales record of 23.

Missing football? We certainly are. So let’s go back to a happier time, when there was live sport, short shorts and magnificent shirts.

The year is 1991. Bryan Adams is dominating the charts with ‘(Everything I Do) I Do It For You’, mullets are still popular and Germany has not long been reunified.

That’s significant in a footballing context because West Germany – World Cup winners for a third time in 1990 – are now playing alongside the old East Germany as one, unified Germany.

New name, same power: Germany are unbeaten in 16 months and 16 matches, and next on the agenda for Berti Vogts’ men is a trip to Cardiff for a European Championship qualifier.

Their opponents, Wales, have made a flying start to their Euro 92 qualifying campaign, top of Group 5 as they bid to reach a major tournament for the first time since 1958.

This is Wales’ best chance to qualify for years – but they’ll need to scale new heights to stand a chance of beating this formidable German side.

The National Stadium in Cardiff is sold out, with almost 35,000 people crammed into a ground which is more famous for rugby but, tonight, is primed for footballing drama.

So the scene is set. Let’s leave our uncertain, sport-less reality behind for a couple of hours and transport ourselves back to that clear summer’s evening on Wednesday, 5 June, 1991.
