Just when Aberdeen looked to be keeping Celtic at arm's length, up pops one of their own former favourites to stick the dagger into their Scottish Cup hopes.

Ryan Christie collects the ball wide on the right and cuts inside on to his favourite left foot and curls a trademark drive into the far corner.

Great strike, but the Scotland midfielder should have been closed down sooner.

Bit more pressure from Aberdeen. Ryan Hedges has a sight of goal, but he delays his shot and it's deflected wide.

From the corner, Matty Kennedy's dangerous cross is flicked on at the front post by Ash Taylor, but the header is wide of the far post.

Jeremie Frimpong has been done a couple of times by Matty Kennedy already, but the Celtic right-back returns the favour and sends a dangerous cross whipping across the face of goal but without finding a team-mate.

Maybe a bit of ring rust for Sam Cosgrove at end - and maybe the same at the other for Odsonne Edouard.

The French striker, who has returned from a bout of Covid-19, has two bites the cherry after a clever flick from Ryan Christie. However, the first is blocked by Joe Lewis and the goalkeeper recovers to save the shot on the rebound.

Another good run and cross from Matty Kennedy - and again it finds the head of Sam Cosgrove.

However, the striker's header from a difficult angle is deflected wide for a corner that Celtic clear.

It's Celtic's turn to threaten, but Aberdeen clear the danger as the Glasgow side ping the ball about inside their penalty area.

Aberdeen start promisingly with Matty Kennedy sending in a cross that is met by the head of Sam Cosgrove - two players back in the side combining there.

However, the ball skims wide off the big striker's forehead despite the Englishman stealing between two defenders.

To reach their first final since 2017, they will have to go one better than last Sunday's 3-3 draw in the league and end Celtic's 10-game unbeaten run against them.

Indeed, the Dons have suffered seven semi-final or final defeats by the Glasgow side in a row since Eoin Jess secured a 1-0 League Cup semi-final win back in September 1992.

It was like an old-style Glasgow Cup in the early rounds for Neil Lennon's cup holders.

First, they eased aside Championship hosts Partick Thistle 2-1 then doused League One side Clyde's hopes of repeating upset of 13 years earlier with a 3-0 success in Cumbernauld.

Quarter-final hosts St Johnstone proved more stubborn until Ryan Christie's late free-kick in Perth secured a 34th consecutive domestic cup win.

Celtic manager Neil Lennon says Odsonne Edouard's return is "psychologically a big lift" for Celtic.

He also tells BBC Sportsound that Kristoffer Ajer's injury is not as bad as first feared and the defender should return next week, although he misses out today.

"We've got to keep our focus, this one has slipped under the radar a little bit, but we feel it's unfinished business here and do do another treble would be quite a feat," he says. "After a brilliant performance on Thursday, we're hoping for more of the same.

"We have to turn the good performances into wins."
