Karl Darlow does the basics well. That's what I like about him. He doesn't over complicate things. He distributes well when he needs to. People say they want goalkeepers who can play out from the back etc. but the most important thing is keeping the ball out of the net. Darlow does that so well.

Chelsea v Man City (16:30 GMT)

    Stephen Warnock
Ex-Leeds and Liverpool defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Chelsea have invested heavily in the squad this season. If Frank Lampard doesn't qualify for the Champions League, he will get sacked.

I genuinely believe that. But at some point as a club, you have to invest in the long term. You can't just go sacking managers left, right and centre. It's so difficult to invest heavily in the squad and just go and win the league. It's not like that.

Chelsea are underachieving this season. Timo Werner and Kai Havertz haven't performed yet.

At the moment Chelsea are still there. There hasn't been one team who has ran away with it. While that continues to happen and teams continue to drop points, Chelsea will still be in the mix.

Chelsea and Manchester City have had their bad days but so has everybody else - and City's league position is artificially low because of their games in hand.

Heading into 2021, only seven points separated the top nine teams - and judging by the current rate of points won per game, the title could be sealed with just 79 points. That would be the lowest title-winning tally since 1999.

Could Chelsea or Manchester City get to 79 points or more? Absolutely. Seldom, approaching the halfway point of a Premier League season, can a game between sides who started the weekend sixth and eighth in the table look so important to the title race - but this is obviously no ordinary season.

  7. Team newspublished at 13:29 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2021

    Newcastle v Leicester (14:15 GMT)

Newcastle boss Steve Bruce makes two changes for the Foxes' visit - one enforced as Sean Longstaff comes into midfield for Isaac Hayden, who is suspended after accumulating five yellow cards this campaign.

Miguel Almiron replaces Jacob Murphy in the Magpies' other switch from their hard-fought goalless draw with Liverpool on Wednesday.

Newcastle XI: Darlow, Clark, Schar, Fernandez, Yedlin, M Longstaff, Ritchie, S Longstaff, Almiron, Joelinton, Wilson.

Subs: Dubravka, Dummett, Manquillo, Shelvey, Hendrick, Krafth, Muprhy, Carroll, Gayle.

Several players returning from injury have added to Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers' options for the trip to St James' Park and he makes wholesale changes - seven of them - from the team that drew 1-1 at Crystal Palace last time out.

James Maddison and Wesley Fofana come straight back in after missing the Palace game with minor knocks, while Belgium full-back Timothy Castagne also returns.

Jamie Vardy, who surprisingly started on the bench at Palace, is restored to the starting XI as are Youri Tielemans, Marc Albrighton and Wilfred Ndidi.

Leicester XI: Schmeichel, Justin, Fofana, Evans, Castagne, Albrighton, Tielemans, Ndidi, Maddison, Barnes, Vardy.

Subs: Ward, Soyuncu, Amartey, Under, Mendy, Praet, Thomas, Iheanacho, Perez.

  8. How Arsenal have their confidence backpublished at 13:25 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2021

    West Brom 0-4 Arsenal

It was only 11 days ago that West Brom manager Sam Allardyce said he considered Arsenal a relegation rival.

But after a week which Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta described as "crucial," his side are now 12 points above the relegation zone and could be starting to look like European contenders once again.

How has Arteta turned things around? Check out our analysis here and see what the gang thought on Match of the Day in the video below.

Newcastle are currently on their longest Premier League winless run this season, with two draws and two defeats.

They could fail to score in four successive fixtures in all competitions for the first time in five years.

Meanwhile, Leicester have won six of their eight Premier League away games this season, losing just one.

The Foxes have won on each of their past four league visits to St James' Park, keeping a clean sheet in three of them.

The stats are not really on Newcastle's side for this one.

  10. 'We know how good the Foxes are on the road'published at 13:18 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2021

    Mark Lawrenson

Newcastle got a really good point against Liverpool, when Magpies boss Steve Bruce was just coming under a bit of pressure.

But this is Leicester away, and we know how good the Foxes are on the road. Jamie Vardy should start too, after only coming on as a substitute against Crystal Palace earlier in the week.

    Prediction: 0-2

Jamie Vardy has been restored to the starting line-up and James Maddison returns from injury as Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers makes a huge seven changes from the side that drew 1-1 at Crystal Palace on Monday.

Sean Longstaff comes in for the suspended Isaac Hayden as one of two changes made by Newcastle boss Steve Bruce from the team that held Liverpool 0-0 in midweek.

You are a footballer you want to be playing, but there are so many things on your mind that you have concerns over.

It is not an easy time to be putting yourself in a position where you are being judged on your performance no matter what you are going through. We don't know what players have had it, what players are suffering from long covid.

  13. 'Players in a very privileged position'published at 13:12 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2021

    Stephen Warnock
Ex-Leeds and Liverpool defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

We are trying to make sure football is on for the well being of people around the world, to make sure there is something to take the attention away from what is happening.

Players are in a very privileged position, I am the same and you have to realise you are giving something back at this very vital time, try your best to be a role model and the families have to do this as well.

They have to very vigilant because effectively there is potential you can pick it up from them.

  14. Man City 'disappointed' by Mendy breachpublished at 13:11 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2021

Manchester City say they are disappointed after defender Benjamin Mendy breached Covid-19 rules by hosting a New Year's Eve party.

A spokesperson for the France international said the 26-year-old held a dinner party with guests from outside his household.

The mixing of households indoors is banned under the UK government's tier four restrictions.

City said they would conduct an internal investigation.

"While it is understood that elements of this incident have been misinterpreted in the reports [carried by newspapers earlier], and that the player has publicly apologised for his error, the club is disappointed to learn of the transgression and will be conducting an internal investigation," the club said in a statement.

  16. City without five for Chelsea gamepublished at 13:06 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2021

Chelsea v Man City (16:30 GMT)

The coronavirus situation is a concern in football at the moment. As well as fixture postponements, teams are missing players due to the virus.

Manchester City travel to Chelsea today with five players unavailable following positive coronavirus tests.

Kyle Walker, Gabriel Jesus and three unnamed players are in isolation.

"I don't think the Premier League allow us to name the players but you will know [on Sunday]," City boss Pep Guardiola said.

City's game at Everton on 28 December was called off following the positive tests but the rest of the first-team bubble has since tested negative.

We can only dream of what might have been

Right about now we should be well into Burnley versus Fulham - a game that no doubt would have been packed with goals, chances and non-stop action...

Or more likely it would have been goalless at half time, but nevertheless we have been robbed of a game today after positive coronavirus cases at Fulham.

So instead we have just two Premier League fixtures - Newcastle versus Leicester (14:15 GMT) and Chelsea against Manchester City (16:30 GMT).

We may be a game down, but that is still a pretty strong line-up.
