  2. Post update

    Italy v England (19:45 BST)

  3. Post update

    Italy v England (19:45 BST)

The same woman who sang God Save the King throws off her red cardigan and is now wearing an Italy kit, singing their national anthem.

  4. Post update

    Italy v England (19:45 BST)

This is England's first game since Queen Elizabeth II died and King Charles III took the throne.

That means God Save the King is being sung before an England game for the first time since a home game with Austria on 28 November 1951.

"When King George VI died [in February 1952] there were midweek fixtures that same day," Alex Jackson from the National Football Museum in Manchester said.

"There were a number of FA Cup ties and some league fixtures. Before each game they sang 'Abide with Me' which was followed by a two-minute silence and then sang God Save the Queen."

  6. Spaces at the San Siro

    Italy 0-0 England

    Phil McNulty

BBC Sport chief football writer in Milan

Coming up to kick-off time at the San Siro and thousands of empty seats in the famous old stadium. Still putting on a decent light show as the Italy team is announced. And announced very loudly.

  7. Post update

England manager Gareth Southgate talking to Channel 4 about his left-back/wing-back options: "It has been difficult for Ben [Chillwell], coming back from a long-term injury, not had a full 90 minutes in 12 months, but he's a good player and in that wing-back area he's a real threat towards goal, but with Buyako [Saka] and Luke [Shaw] we have cover there this week."

  8. Post update

    Italy v England (19:45 BST)

England goalkeeper Nick Pope to BBC Radio 5 Live: "I think everyone wants to play at a World Cup for whichever country you represent.

"My best chance of that is to play well if I get the opportunity in this camp and then go back to Newcastle and kick on and prove myself to be a goalkeeper worthy to start for a World Cup for England.

"It’s exciting… World Cups always are, whether you are playing or not playing.

"For myself, part of the move to Newcastle was to take myself to that next level and push myself and be the best player I could be.

"I think playing for England wouldn’t be bad either."

  9. Post update

    Italy v England (19:45 BST)

    Simon Gleave

Head of sports analysis, Nielsen Gracenote

England were pre-tournament favourites to win their Nations League group but now have an 80% chance of finishing bottom and suffering relegation to League B according to Gracenote's simulations.

Germany are favourites to win the group (51%) followed by Hungary (29%) and Italy(20%).

  10. 'Conte has done a lot for me'

    Italy v England (19:45 BST)

    Eric Dier

Eric Dier is back in the England squad having made his last international appearance in November 2020 and he believes he is playing at the "best level" of his career thanks to Tottenham manager Antonio Conte.

"I don't want to sound like a teacher's pet but he has done a lot for me," Dier said.

"Tactically I have learnt a lot. Obviously there is a huge emphasis on it with him and I have learnt so much, different things tactically.

"He is the godfather of that [wing-back] system so I feel like with him you're constantly learning and evolving within that system, constantly adding new things."

England captain and Spurs team-mate Harry Kane told BBC Radio Live: “I think he has improved. He would be the first to admit that.

“Consistently, it’s probably the best period of his career.

“Antonio is a great coach, I think he gets the best out of a lot of his players that he works with."

  11. Post update

    Italy v England (19:45 BST)

Bukayo Saka has been voted the 2021-22 England men’s player of the year by the fans.

The 21-year-old Arsenal winger beat Declan Rice and Harry Kane into second and third.

Saka scored three goals in nine caps last season.

  12. Post update

    Italy v England (19:45 BST)

England have never won a competitive away game against Italy.

The Three Lions have failed to win in five meetings with the Italians since a 2-1 friendly success in 2012.

Their last competitive win against the Azzurri was in qualifying for the 1978 World Cup at Wembley.

  13. 'What else... would people look for us to do?'

    Italy v England (19:45 BST)

    Southgate

Gareth Southgate says England's players cannot do much more beyond discussing human rights issues in the build-up to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Captain Harry Kane will wear a OneLove armband in England's upcoming Nations League games and at the World Cup.

But the FA has been criticised for the delay in its statement on human rights.

"There is not a lot more the players in particular can do other than talk about those issues and put them on the table," said England boss Southgate.

"We have got to be realistic about what is achievable and also we have taken good advice on what people would like.

"I haven't seen yet, other than not going to the tournament, what else it would be that people would be looking for us to do.

"We are always ears open in terms of listening to opinions, that's what we have tried to do through this whole process."

Only 15% of you thought captain Harry Maguire should start.

You can still pick your England XI here.

  15. England still one of best teams - Mancini

    Italy v England (19:45 BST)

    Mancini

England remain "one of the best teams in the world", says Italy boss Roberto Mancini.

Italy beat Gareth Southgate's England in the Euro 2020 final at Wembley last summer - but have since failed to qualify for this winter's World Cup.

England qualified for Qatar but have yet to win in four Nations League games and could be relegated.

"The English team is a great team," Mancini said.

"It was a great team in Euro 2020 and it was a great team before."

  16. Post update

    Germany v Hungary (19:45 BST)

The other game in England's group is between Germany and Hungary.

Hungary will reach the Nations League finals, and book a Euro 2024 play-off place, if they beat Germany and Italy do not beat England.

But Germany will top the group going into the final game with England if they win tonight. We will bring you updates from Leipzig.

  17. Post update

There were a couple of Nations League games earlier on.

Georgia have been promoted to League B - the tier England could be relegated to - after beating North Macedonia 2-0.

That also secures them a Euro 2024 play-off place.

Estonia beat Malta 2-1 - with a late winner from Scottish football journeyman Henri Anier - to seal promotion to League C.

  18. Post update

    Italy v England (19:45 BST)

England boss Gareth Southgate told BBC Radio 5 Live: "I think subconsciously when you're winning you maybe don't reflect quite as deeply on why you are winning, or even some of the things that aren't quite right even though you are winning.

"When you lose like we did, then you reflect on everything and go really deep. That's not a bad process.

"I have been through a difficult run of results as a manager before and that's helpful because you know 'why'. If you didn't know 'why' poorer results happen, then that would be more of a concern."

  19. Southgate criticism 'very harsh', says Grealish

    Italy v England (19:45 BST)

Video caption: Southgate criticism was 'very harsh' - Grealish

Jack Grealish says criticism of England manager Gareth Southgate this summer was "very harsh".

England failed to win any of their four Nations League games in June, including 1-0 and 4-0 defeats by Hungary.

However, Southgate led England to the 2018 World Cup semi-finals and a first European Championship final in 2021.

"I thought it was harsh but sometimes that's what you get if you're English. I've had my fair share," Manchester City winger Grealish said.

"We reached the final last year - then the loss to Hungary at the start of the last camp, but before that the last time we'd lost a game over 90 minutes was Belgium in November 2020."
