  2. A manager's decision

    England v Germany (19:45 BST)

    Andros Townsend

Everton midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think the manager [Gareth Southgate] must have some of the decision. If it was purely based on form, then we would have some of the Opta Stats picking the England side.

  3. Get Involved

    #bbcfootball

CM: I sense this won't be a popular opinion, but England would be more dynamic as a *team* without Harry Kane. He is clearly the best striker England have, but the team would be more flowing in attack by playing Sterling through the middle, with two other (true) wingers.

Darren Harvey: Yes we've not done brilliantly the last five games but let's put it in perspective. We used to play lesser teams a lot in the old friendly calendar. Now we're playing teams a lot better all the time. We will have barren spells but we'll be OK come the World Cup!

  4. 'Loyal to the players'

    England v Germany (19:45 BST)

    Chris Sutton

Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Gareth Southgate has been loyal to the players that haven't let him down in the past. The bigger problem for Gareth is if after tonight, these guys go back to Manchester United and get very little game time.

There's 12/13 games before the World Cup, then it's going to become a big issue.

  5. Eager to impress

    England v Germany (19:45 BST)

It's the last chance for the players to impress Gareth Southgate and get themselves not only on the plane to Qatar but in the starting line-up for England's World Cup opener against Iran on 21 November.

  7. Five without a win

    England v Germany (19:45 BST)

England have gone five matches without a win (drew two, lost three) for the first time since June 2014 (also five), failing to score in three successive internationals for the first time since November 2000 (also three).

The Three Lions last endured a longer winless run between April-June 1993 (six), while only once in their history have they failed to score in four successive games (April-May 1981).

  8. 'Goals create happy fans'

    England v Germany (19:45 BST)

England captain Harry Kane, talking to Channel 4: "We need to be more clinical. We got into really good areas [in Friday's game against Italy] but didn't have the final pass, run or finish. In these big games those are the fine margins.

"It [not scoring] has been frustrating for sure. I love scoring goals, as do all attacking players. We just haven't been able to do that well in an England shirt. We'll keep our heads down and keep working hard.

"It is great to see all the fans here. We'll want to start well and we'll need to play well on the ball first and foremost and goals create happy fans so it is our aim.

"Germany are a great team so it will be tough. We need to play our own game and go out there and try get a good result."

  9. England aim for another win over Germany

    England v Germany (19:45 BST)

Who could forget the meeting between these sides last year when England and Germany went head-to-head at Wembley in the last-16 of Euro 2020.

    England quiz

  11. One of the greatest rivalries in world football

    England

England host Germany in the Nations League in the latest instalment of one of their biggest rivalries.

Gareth Southgate's side drew with Die Mannschaft in their last meeting in June, also in the Nations League - Harry Kane's penalty two minutes from time earning a point for the Three Lions.

England's last win against Germany came in the Euro 2020 last 16, their first knockout win over their old rivals since the 1966 World Cup final.

Between those games, the Germans had the upper hand in major tournaments - although there was also a very famous win in qualifying for the Three Lions.

BBC Sport has looked back at some classic meetings between the two men's teams and click here for some good and bad memories.

  12. Southgate needs a win

    England v Germany

    Phil McNulty

BBC Sport chief football writer at Wembley

Gareth Southgate is a realist and has detected the change in mood as England have gone five games without a win, their last two defeats being characterised by the first vocal criticism of the manager from supporters.

Southgate is as safe as it gets as manager for all the noise, and rightly so after leading England to the World Cup semi-final and Euros final, but a win tonight against Germany will make the last few weeks before Qatar a lot more comfortable.

  13. Southgate criticism 'unfair', says Sterling

    England v Germany (19:45 BST)

England forward Raheem Sterling believes it is time for the players to step up and take the “unfair” pressure off boss Gareth Southgate.

Asked what he made of the criticism of Southgate, Sterling replied: “A lot of it has been unfair but that’s the level we are at with England. After the summer we came away and had a look at ourselves and none of us were proud, it is not for Gareth to shoulder the blame.

“The manager can play whatever he wants to play but when we go on to the pitch we have to have that mentality that we are not just on the pitch to be on the pitch but we have to have that winning mentality.

“That’s the message over the last couple of days when the boys have been speaking; it’s get more out of each other, push each other, take criticism.

“If someone is not doing something right then we have to push each other to try and get the best for the team.

“I don’t think it’s about fighting or doing anything silly like that. On the field, if there is something not right and somebody is not doing what they should be doing, I think that’s the level we are at.”

  14. Southgate urges supporters to get behind the team

England play their final match before the World Cup tonight when Gareth Southgate hopes supporters get behind the players regardless of their feelings about him.

He said: “We’ve got 90,000 people, the stadium’s sold out. People want to come and see this team play, that’s because the players have done an unbelievable job for six years.

“We were on the back of a really difficult time, in terms of the relationship with the fans, at the start of that journey. Slowly we’ve built the (tournament) finishes. Of course it’s not healthy for the team to be having this noise around them. I fully understand that.

“But it’s for me to take responsibility, it’s for me to allow them to go and play. I want them to feel the freedom. I think they know that we always talk about that within the training ground and on the training pitch.

“I would urge the supporters to get behind the team. How they deal with me at the end or whenever, on the phone-ins or whatever else, is completely different.

“But this is their last chance to see the boys before they go to the World Cup and we’re all in it together. We can only succeed if we’re all pushing in the same direction and we’ve all got that positive energy towards doing well."

  17. How it stands

England will finish bottom of Nations League Group A3, no matter the result at Wembley, and will be relegated to League B.

The other match in the section is in Budapest where Hungary will win the group if they avoid defeat at home to Italy.

The Italians need a win if they are to join Croatia, the Netherlands and either Portugal or Spain (who play tomorrow) in June's Nations League semi-finals.

  18. A campaign to forget

Games against reigning European champions Italy as well as matches against Germany and Hungary were always going to be a tough challenge for England, but no-one expected it to go this badly.

The 1-0 loss at the San Siro on Friday to Italy meant England will be relegated to the second tier of the competition when it is next staged in 2024-25.
