La’eeb has been unveiled as the official mascot for Qatar 2022.

"He belongs to a parallel mascot-verse that is indescribable – everyone is invited to interpret what it looks like," Fifa says.

I'm going to say a plastic bag being blown in the wind.

  3. Who is doing the draw?published at 17:40 British Summer Time 1 April 2022

Eight former players and managers will be conducting the draw, including World Cup winners Cafu, of Brazil, and Lothar Matthaus, of Germany.

The others will be Jay-Jay Okocha, Tim Cahill, Adel Ahmed MalAllah, Ali Daei, Bora Milutinovic and Rabah Madjer.

Ex-Everton midfielder Cahill scored Australia's first World Cup goal and played at four tournaments, while former Bolton playmaker Okocha helped Nigeria qualify for their first World Cup in 1994.

Serb Milutinovic is the only person to manage at five consecutive World Cups with different teams (Mexico 1986, Costa Rica 1990, USA 1994, Nigeria 1998 and China 2002).

MalAllah won Fifa World Youth Championship silver with Qatar in 1981 and played at the 1984 Olympics.

Madjer scored for Algeria in their 1982 World Cup win over West Germany, while Daei was the all-time men's top scorer in internationals with 112 until Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo overtook him last year.

They're being called to the stage one by one.

Best case scenario for England-US, Iran, Cameroon, worst case scenario-Germany, South Korea, Canada. Predicting a solid campaign for England, I think we have the players to win it, but we need some luck. Semi final has to be a minimum target. Come on boys!

Brazil legend Cafu, who is one of eight people doing the draw today, said: “I am getting used to this, but it still gives me goosebumps.

“It is a sign that the World Cup is getting nearer. It is nearly 20 years since I became the last South American player to lift the World Cup and it is a memory I will always cherish.

"Playing at the World Cup, when your whole country comes to a standstill to watch the game, is incomparable.”

Every campaign since Brazil won it in 2002 has ended when they have played a western European side and every Argentine campaign since then has been ended by a European side also. That is where the battle is for the South Americans. Both Brazil and Argentina are very confident and appear to be peaking at the right time. We have so little to go on. As a result of the pandemic and the Nations League it is almost impossible for the pair to fix up games against the European sides.

Even in Argentina I think they would say Brazil are favourites at the moment. Both are impressive. It is the best team that Lionel Messi has played in for Argentina. Their defence has got much better. But with Brazil they don't even look like conceding goals and in the last few months it has been coming together up front. Suddenly it is not all about Neymar. Although this tournament will define his legacy with Brazil.

  20. How did Qatar come to host the World Cup?published at 17:18 British Summer Time 1 April 2022

Qatar 2022 has been controversial from the very moment it was announced by football's world governing body, Fifa, in 2010.

As a very small (if very rich) state with little footballing history, and no record of ever qualifying for the World Cup, it was a shock to many when Qatar beat competition from the US, Australia, South Korea and Japan.

The decision prompted allegations that Fifa officials had been bribed to award the World Cup to Qatar, although an independent investigation commissioned by Fifa later found no hard evidence of this.

Qatar denies allegations that it bought delegates' votes, but a corruption investigation by the French authoritiesis is still ongoing, and in 2020 the US accused three Fifa officials of receiving payments.
