Southport Phil: Ten Hag could have released Ronaldo when Ronaldo initially asked. To me Ten Hag was trying to be The Big I Am!!

Richard: Erik Ten Hag has played this whole scenario masterfully. He's got what he wanted and come out smelling of roses. Thanks for the memories, Cristiano, but we're better off without you.

  2. Post update

This is probably the highest profile player exit at Manchester United since November 2005 when captain Roy Keane left - also by mutual consent - and also for a critical interview.

  3. Post update

Cristiano Ronaldo scored 118 goals in 292 games in his first spell at Old Trafford before leaving for Real Madrid in 2009.

In that six-year spell he won three Premier League titles, one Champions League, two League Cups and one FA Cup - as well as the Fifa Club World Cup and Community Shield.

But this 18-month spell yielded just 27 goals in 54 games - and no silverware.

  4. Post update

Cristiano Ronaldo had just over seven months remaining on his £500,000-a-week contract with United.

His departure leaves him free to sign for another club when the transfer window opens in January.

Mike: Been a great player, but can't accept he's no longer at his peak; narcissistic enough to think everything should revolve around him in perpetuity; petulant & disruptive when it doesn't. So keen to stand on his dignity that he lost it altogether.

Paul J, Newmarket: Like many I was excited by his return at first. However, on the outside I could see that there were cracks being pampered over on Ronaldo's part. No one player is bigger than a club no matter how the situation is. A club is a club. If you do not feel or want to be part of that club then there is always the outside world. Some clubs are better off without the toxic attention seekers

  6. Team news

    France v Australia (19:00 GMT)

Despite many injuries, France still put out a strong team - with Kylian Mbappe, Antoine Griezmann, Ousmane Dembele and Olivier Giroud in their front four.

Three of Australia's back four play in Scotland, with the other at Stoke.

  7. 'Ten Hag has got what he wanted'

    Rio Ferdinand

Former Man Utd defender on BBC One

Cristiano obviously did that interview with the mindset that he wasn’t happy and wanted to get out of the club. He made that very clear.

I think Erik ten Hag got what he wanted in this situation as well. Both parties are happy and we can move on.

The next chapter for Cristiano? It depends what his motivation is. Play in the Champions League? Money? To continue playing somewhere with a nice climate?

We'll find out in due course I'm sure.

  8. Why has Ronaldo left Man Utd?

Unless you have been avoiding the media altogether for the last week - or you have muted every mention of Piers Morgan... - it feels unlikely you don't know why things have come to a head for Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United.

But in case you did miss it - Ronaldo gave a TV interview where he criticised various elements of the club, the owners, the management, former players etc.

He is currently at the World Cup with Portugal.

  9. Ronaldo's statement...

    Cristiano Ronaldo

    Unemployed footballer

Following conversations with Manchester United we have mutually agreed to end our contract early.

I love Manchester United and I love the fans, that will never ever change. However, it feels like the right time for me to seek a new challenge.

I wish the team every success for the remainder of the season and for the future.

  10. Club statement...

    Manchester United

Cristiano Ronaldo is to leave Manchester United by mutual agreement, with immediate effect.

The club thanks him for his immense contribution across two spells at Old Trafford, scoring 145 goals in 346 appearances, and wishes him and his family well for the future.

Everyone at Manchester United remains focused on continuing the team’s progress under Erik ten Hag and working together to deliver success on the pitch.

Well actually that might have to wait a bit because...
