The Germans have such a height advantage over Japan and they are crossing it. They haven't tried to work anything short. Show a bit of invention.

I don't know what brand of football Japan are trying to play. I didn't expect to see such a tepid performance. They have some really good technicians in their midfield but there are no patterns of play. They haven't been willing to play.

That looks very civilised for a World Cup match.

A Japan goal might liven things up a bit.

What a goal this would have been, the ball is glued to Musiala's feet. He chopped past four Japan defenders and he needed to show some composure there as he ballooned the ball over.

Everything but the finish!

That is brilliant from Jamal Musiala. He skips past one, two, three, four Japan defenders inside the area but his shot flies over the bar!

What a goal that would have been. Musiala is showing the world why he is so highly regarded right now.

Launching the ball down the field when the Japan players aren't the biggest is quite odd. The German defenders are going to gobble that up all afternoon.

Left-backs watching this will be bracing themselves for a busy 90 (OK, more like 100) minutes against Japan. The average positions from that half show how they tried to find width down the right, where 55% of their attacks went.

Out on that flank, Junya Ito's passing accuracy was their lowest, hitting only 14%. The introduction of Takehiro Tomiyasu on the opposite side could help his team spread play more.

Surely you have to cross there?

Nico Schlotterbeck goes on a surging run towards the area and lays it off to Serge Gnabry, who instead of laying back to Schlotterbeck in space goes for a shot from a tight angle that clips the very top of the bar.

Japan get the second half started.

Japan have made a change at the break as Arsenal's Takehiro Tomiyasu comes on for Takefusa Kubo.

German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser has worn the "OneLove" armband while sitting next to Fifa President Gianni Infantino.

Faeser was seen wearing the armband - which shows solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community - while chatting with Infantino during the first half.

She earlier criticised Fifa, saying the threat of sanctions over players wearing the armband was unacceptable behaviour.

"This is not alright, how federations are being put under pressure," Faeser said during a visit to a German FA event in Doha before the game.

"In today's times it is incomprehensible that Fifa does not want people to openly stand for tolerance and against discrimination. It does not fit in our times and it is not appropriate towards people."

The Germany players all covered their mouths in protest during their team photo before kick-off.

It's been a strange performance from Japan. We know they like to counter attack but they've shown a real lack of ambition. Especially after the German goal. German have had a lot of joy down the left hand side. It was a penalty, Raum was brought down, it was a Gonda gaffe.

Then Germany have dominated and nearly had a second before half time. Japan have to be more attacking in the second half and risk losing the game to try and get back in the game but I've been a bit disappointed with Japan's reaction after the first goal more than anything.

The goal changes everything and I would like to think that Japan, who have some really attacking players, show more attacking intent in the second half.

Kai Havertz could have been forgiven for feeling a little surprised to have seen the ball for that disallowed goal.

The Chelsea star has had far less possession than any of his Germany team-mates - his 20 touches are 13 fewer than next-nearest Thomas Muller and 56 fewer than former Stamford Bridge regular Antonio Rudiger.

Here's his touchmap - surely an area Germany will want to address if they are to become more comfortable in this game.

Japan had an early disallowed goal and it's their fans who have been the more vocal in the first half.

But the 1-0 scoreline is all that matters despite the Germans not really making themselves heard apart from when they cheered for the goal.

That's the criticism of the Japan manager Hajime Moriyasu. He sets his team up quite negatively. They will have to go toe to toe with the Germans if they are going to get back into this game but they won't want to concede a second.

The game plan is just to hang on in there but you have to be adaptable. They are playing with such fear, so tentative. The Germans are so dominant.

And there goes the half-time whistle.

Japan started well but a lapse in concentration from Shuichi Gonda gifted Germany a penalty, who improved as the half went on.

Japan have their best chance seconds before the break!

A dangerous cross from the left is met by Daizen Maeda, but he cannot quite direct his header on target.
