James: Spain are really labouring through this. It's as if their players are watching the Costa Rica game it affects them so much!

Owen: And to think i almost painted the bedroom instead of watching the football tonight.

    Japan 2-1 Spain

It is all Spain now and I am not sure if Japan can hold on because the ball is pretty much permanently in the Japan final third.

Twelve minutes to go. Twelve long minutes for Japan fans.

    Costa Rica 2-2 Germany

    Conor McNamara
    BBC Radio 5 Live commentator

Well the drama never stops because Kai Havertz off the bench for Germany has got the ball into the back of the net and it's 2-2. Germany desperately needed that. It may not be enough for them but it could save Spain.

    The drama isn't over yet.

  7. Hard to keep uppublished at 20:30 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2022

    Japan 2-1 Spain

    Chris Bevan
BBC Sport at Khalifa International Stadium, Qatar

It's hard to keep up with what is happening at the moment. There were huge roars here from the Japan fans when the big screen here flashed up what the group looked like with Costa Rica winning.... but then seconds later the Spain fans to my right celebrated wildly after hearing that Germany had equalised.

    Japan 2-1 Spain

    Ian Dennis
BBC Radio 5 Live senior football reporter

A Spain goal here would take Germany through because their goal difference would be level with Japan but Germany would have scored more goals.

There's 15 minutes to go and now Spain are pressing.

You can't take your eye off what is happening in either of these games at the moment. Absolutely anything can happen.

    Kai Havertz

What a game this. Kai Havertz with the most composed bit of finishing all night gets played in on goal by Niclas Fullkrug as the substitutes combine and dinks the ball over Costa Rica keeper Keylor Navas

Dan: If Spain go out here it must be one of the only times a team has scored 9 group stage goals and not qualified. Madness.

Rishi: This has to be the most unpredictable world cup ever!

    Matt Upson
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

I just can't believe it. I cannot believe the turnaround in this second half.

And now I'm watching a replay of a Japan chance that they should have scored.

I'm not sure the Spain players know they need a goal yet.

  16. CLOSE!published at 20:28 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2022

    Japan 2-1 Spain

What a chance for Takuma Asano. What. A. Chance.

A brilliant attack down the left and Kaoru Mitoma plays a brilliant ball into the middle for Asano, who should at least get the shot on target but it squirms wide.

    That would have been incredible.
