One of the simplest finishes you will ever come across, Michy Batshuayi.

In between two defenders, half volley, straight pass, side-foot past the 'keeper.

    Meat and drink.

    Michy Batshuayi

Against the run of play and it's cruel on Canada...but Belgium have their noses in front.

A punt forward lands in the path of Michy Batshuayi who is unchallenged when he shoots and finds the net.

A good finish but poor marking by Canada.

Roberto Martinez just wants to hear the half-time whistle. He's got a big team talk coming up. Belgium and their team of stars have been outplayed by Canada.

It's a great watch but Canada have nothing to show for all of their good work.

It looked like there was contact. I won't be surprised if the referee is told to look at this.

    Oh hello. More penalty drama!

Richie Laryea goes down inside the box after a challenge by Axel Witsel.

The referee considers it for a split seconds before waving play on.

Now VAR is getting involved. No penalty!

When you look at this Belgium side, yes it would be an upset but Vertonghen and Alderweireld are old and aging. Witsel looks tired and then you've got Michy Batshuayi leading your line.

For me the reasons why they could struggle in this game are quite clear. Roberto Martinez needs legs in this team. He's got to look at that at some point, otherwise it's going to cost him.

Canada are a breath of fresh air. They are playing with no fear and are so pleasing on the eye. They're a joy to watch. Belgium are playing like rabbits in headlights.

Thibaut Courtois has saved five of the nine penalties he has faced for club and country in all competitions in 2022 (56%). That's decent.

Jonathan David's four efforts at goal are twice as many as the entire Belgium team has had.

The forward has an xG of 0.69 - only bettered by Alphonso Davies' 0.79, although Canada fans won't want reminding of why that is.

Both of Belgium's attempts have been by Michy Batshuayi, who currently has an xG of 0.1.

John: The time between the penalty being awarded and actually taken seems to be getting longer and longer - not helpful for those penalty takers of a nervous disposition. Sometimes they are stood there waiting two-to-three minutes. No wonder he missed.

Batshuayi has been poor so far, up top. He's not holding the ball up well enough.

Belgium need time, as soon as anyone runs in behind them, they can't handle it. It's just age. Belgium don't have the legs. Canada have the youth. At times, Belgium look shattered and that's why it looks so scrappy from them.

Roberto Martinez has got a lot of work to do. He has to thank Courtois for his big save from the penalty spot and a couple of others too.

Canada are causing havoc at the moment, just through energy and getting behind the ball.

Buchanan, David and Hoillett are just rotating. It is working well for them.

There's another upset brewing. Canada have been all over Belgium but they haven't been able to find a breakthrough. Will they pay for not taking their chances?

Great work by Alistair Johnston [no relation, by the way]. He goes down inside the Belgium box after a run but picks himself up before testing Thibaut Courtois with a fierce shot.
