Is today the last time we see Luka Modric on the World Cup stage?

It could happen if results go against Croatia.

The 37-year-old midfielder, who is appearing in his fourth World Cup, is a five-time Champions League winner and helped his country reach the World Cup final in Russia four years ago.

Why has this World Cup proved so controversial? BBC Analysis editor Ros Atkins has taken a look at how Qatar won the World Cup, as well as the human rights and environmental issues surrounding the tournament.

Argentina have climbed to second favourites to win the World Cup after their 2-0 victory over Poland saw their chances rise to 17% before meeting Australia in the round of 16, according to a prediction model from Opta.

Brazil were the favourites before the tournament got underway and two impressive group stage wins have increased expectation that they can win a sixth World Cup to a one-in-four chance.

The prediction model estimates the probability of each match outcome - win, draw or loss - by using betting market odds and Opta's team rankings. The odds and rankings are based on historical and recent team performances. The model then considers opponent strength and the difficulty of their path to the final by using match outcome probabilities.

There's no harm in having an experienced squad, Croatia have got that but the difference between the two sides is that Croatia have used it in the right way but Belgium have been indifferent.

As players you always get the chance to respond and Belgium need to do that today or they're going home.

Morocco have not conceded in six games in all competitions, going 622 minutes without letting in a goal since facing South Africa in June.

The Atlas Lions have made a group-high 41 clearances as a team during this year’s World Cup, with central defender Romain Saiss contributing 15 of those - including 11 of their 21 in victory over Belgium last time out.

I met a married couple outside the stadium earlier.

We have not met many Europeans in Qatar so most of the supporters of those nations here are actually from elsewhere.

Amanda Sharp and her husband Gage are from Denver, Colorado in the United States.

They travelled around Belgium in 2014 and fell in love with the country. Gage is also a Manchester United fan and grew a bit of fandom for former striker Marouane Fellaini, who is of course Belgian.

Gage is not convinced by Belgium boss Roberto Martinez's playing style and has been disappointed by their performances so far.

"We have been lacklustre. I think it is time Martinez goes. I think he will after this World Cup. Playing three at the back? No, it doesn't work."

Amanda said this felt like the last chance for Belgium's "golden generation" and she also feels Martinez is too negative.

There is just one more day of group games to go after today before the last 16 stage starts on Saturday.

Morocco know they only need a point to reach the World Cup last 16 for the first time since 1986.

But, as you'd expect, manager Walid Regragui will not be sending his team out against already-eliminated Canada with that mindset.

"We are coming up against a team with nothing to lose. They will be giving it everything right up until the final whistle," said Regragui.

"If we are looking for the draw, that would be a mistake.

"It would be an error to go into the match thinking you only need to give 20 or 30% because the draw is fine for us."

Morocco are looking at making it through to the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time in 36 years.

Their fans were in fine voice outside Al Thumama, dancing and chanting "Allez les Maghreb" - parts of north Africa and here in the Arab region is known as the Maghreb.

One fan has travelled over from France and he supports Paris St-Germain so was pleased to see Achraf Hakimi fit to start.

It could be Spain or Germany for them in the round of 16 if they progress.

"Let us just get there first," he said. "Inshallah we will."

There's a few half and half shirts cropping up at this World Cup. Let's hope the craze doesn't catch on in the Premier League.

Despite admirable efforts against Belgium and Croatia in their first World Cup appearance in 36 years, Canada's hopes of progressing to the knockout stages are already over.

However, still waiting for their first ever World Cup point having lost all three games on their previous tournament in 1986, John Herdman's side could yet end on a positive note in Qatar when they meet Morocco today.

"Football people were wondering how we were going to show up," said boss Herdman.

"I think we showed up on the front foot and that will be our approach again.

"We will stay committed to our identity and we will go into this match with an opportunity to make some more history."

I met a very sad Mexico fan on the Metro on my way to the ground. They went out of the competition in dramatic style last night, at the expense of Poland.

He was wearing a sign around his neck saying "my team is out, don’t talk to me. In airplane mode."

He did have a chat with me though. He said he cried after the game. "No beer. I got home and I needed a beer!"

I asked to take a photo of his sign after we discussed the game - "we came so close, I can't believe it" he added.

I got my camera out and he said "oh, wait, I have a better sign. To wish everyone Merry Christmas!"

He is at this match now with his friend from Belgium. We bumped into them again on our way to the media centre and he waved at us. At least he's cheered up.
