Perry: England scored more goals tonight than they did at either the 2010 or the 2014 World Cups. It's actually crazy how much England have improved under Southgate, on and off the pitch. Just so much more optimism

Alfie: England, best team in the group stage (Statistically). England best team in KO16 (Statistically). It's coming home...?

  2. 'It is time Henderson got respect'published at 21:50 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2022

    FT: England 3-0 Senegal

England's Jude Bellingham, speaking to ITV Sport: "The first 35 minutes were tough. They were really compact and tough to get through.

"It was one of those games where we needed to get the first goal, we knew after we did we would be in a good position."

On Jordan Henderson: "Brilliant performance today. I have seen some of the rubbish said about him playing. It is ridiculous, he is so underrated technically. He delivered again in a big game with a massive goal. I think it is time he gets a bit of respect.

"We have shown we can score goals, we are clinical when it matters. And we got the clean sheet again."

Jack: Job done recovered well after a slow start. Second half extremely comfortable. General crossing and set pieces still needs improvement. Bring on the French. Stunned at how poor and little fight Senegal shown from 2-0 down onwards.

Chris: Could be quite crucial that we still have no bookings. Can only incur a suspension from a straight red now.

Senegal conceded three goals in a single World Cup match for only a second time, after their 3-3 draw with Uruguay in the 2002 group stage. This was the nation’s heaviest ever major tournament defeat (World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations).

England have scored 12 goals in four matches at this year’s World Cup, the Three Lions’ joint-most at a single major tournament (World Cup and Euros), level with their 12 goals at the 2018 World Cup.

  5. 'Our mentality was top'published at 21:39 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2022

    FT: England 3-0 Senegal

England striker Harry Kane, speaking to ITV Sport: "Really tough, knockout games are never easy. We have shown great maturity throughout the tournament. Mentality was top from the beginning and scored three good goals. Three clean sheets in a row are really important for us too."

On his goal: "I had so much time. The ball sat up nicely. The connection was perfect. I am a striker so whenever I score I am happy.

"We have a great mixture of youth and experience now. Another knockout win, over the years they have not been easy for England. We will enjoy this one but then our focus turns to that [France game]. It will be a really tough battle."

Super impressive, super confident especially in this second half. I was a little bit concerned until the first goal went in.

You just felt when it would click for England and when they would go through the gears and the quality and the movement would come together, they would pull Senegal apart.

This was a stubborn Senegal team who set up physically and tactically very well for this game. Massive parts of that second half were super comfortable. Not particularly competitive and I just think Senegal found it really hard to get themselves back into this game.

A lot of positives for England and a really good win.

    Great bunch of lads.

Some bad news to bring you on what has been a positive night...

We now know the reason Raheem Sterling was missing for England tonight. Armed intruders broke into his home in the UK while his family were there.

Naturally concerned for the well-being of his children, he is returning home. The BBC have been told there will be the opportunity for Sterling to return should circumstances be right and allow it.

This is an excellent quote: "I don't want to big him up too much because he is still young but he's one of the most gifted players I have ever seen. He has no weakness in his game. I think he will be the best midfielder in the world."

Yeah, Phil, you play it cool. Keep his feet on the ground!

England's Phil Foden, speaking to ITV: "We are going to celebrate tonight but it is knockout football now so we will have to recover and then think about the next opponent. It will be tough.

"Senegal went man to man and were very physical but it was about biding our time and keeping the ball moving more."

On Jude Bellingham: "I don't want to big him up too much because he is still young but he's one of the most gifted players I have ever seen. He has no weakness in his game. I think he will be the best midfielder in the world."

OK, let's revel in those goals shall we?

It's easy to forget, but England were on the back foot in the 15 or so minutes prior to the opening goal.

Jordan Henderson's finish, coming from Jude Bellingham's low ball changed the game...

Paul: I worry about what happens when we face teams like France, Spain etc because of our habit to play safe and within ourselves, but when this England attack stretches its legs it is a delight to watch. Fingers crossed it gets that chance next Saturday...

After a bit of a dodgy opening, there was only ever going to be one winner the moment Jordan Henderson broke through to score.

    Impressive from Gareth Southgate's men.

I think that might be the first time I've watched England in the knockout rounds of a major tournament and it not feel like I've had years sucked out of me like that machine in the Princess Bride.
