The Golden Boot is for France's Kylian Mbappe, who scored eight times in this World Cup, one more than Messi. Huge cheers as he walks up. Utter appreciation for his contribution to this final and tournament.

    An absolute superstar.

  2. Post update

FT: Argentina 3-3 France AET (4-2 on pens)

Argentina's Emi Martinez takes the Golden Glove award for the best keeper. Fair call.

Probably not going to win Strictly anytime soon, though.

  3. Post update

The young player of the tournament goes to Argentina's 21-year-old midfielder Enzo Fernandez.

  4. Post update

FT: Argentina 3-3 France AET (4-2 on pens)

The officials are the first ones up for their medals. Referee Szymon Marciniak had a fine game. Got all the big stuff right, in the toughest of high-pressure environments.

Sho: Never ever stop talking about this World Cup. Never. I've never seen anything like it. From all the shocks in the group stages to the story of Morocco and the other shocks in the knockout stages. And to finish with this final. This final...

  6. 'I'll never see anything like this again'

FT: Argentina 3-3 France AET (4-2 on pens)

    Alan Shearer

Former England striker on BBC One

We're breathless up here. It was just an unbelievable final. It was great to be here, pleasure to be here. I've never seen anything like it and I don't think I'll ever see anything like it again. It was staggering.

  7. Post update

FT: Argentina 3-3 France AET (4-2 on pens)

The trophy is here. Not a bad bit of bling is it? Time to hand over the goods to the victors.

  8. Post update

FT: Argentina 3-3 France AET (4-2 on pens)

  9. A dance of delight

FT: Argentina 3-3 France AET (4-2 on pens)

    Chris Bevan

BBC Sport at Lusail Iconic Stadium

    dance

The Argentina players are together again and dancing in delight as they go over to the wall of blue and white at their end of the ground to thank their fans... while around them the victory podium - which is more like a catwalk - is being constructed.

Messi has just been announced as man of the match on the big screens here, bringing another roar from the Argentina fans. It had to be him, didn't it?

  10. Post update

FT: Argentina 3-3 France AET (4-2 on pens)

Tell you what, Aguero was on that pitch in a flash after the winning penalty.

When Messi sank to his knees in the centre circle, he was about the fifth player on the pile-on.

  11. Post update

FT: Argentina 3-3 France AET (4-2 on pens)

    Chris Sutton

Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

What a game, what an ending.

Did Argentina deserve it? I think they did over the whole piece. They got the job done.

These celebrations will go on deep, deep into the night.

  12. Post update

FT: Argentina 3-3 France AET (4-2 on pens)

Not a bad prize that for Lionel. On run his kids to give him a big hug.

They're gonna have a good first day in the playground when they get back to France.

  13. 'Let it end like this'

FT: Argentina 3-3 France AET (4-2 on pens)

    Tim Vickery

BBC Sport South American football expert

If we have to say goodbye to Lionel Messi, let it end like this.

December 18th has just been announced as the day of the Argentine cardiologist. What a day they've just had. It was a horrible way to end the game, it individualises a team sport.

Scaloni with his team selection said 'my team is more important than the opposition'.

  14. Here is the moment...

  15. Post update

FT: Argentina 3-3 France AET (4-2 on pens)

Kylian Mbappe is currently being consoled by French president Emmanuel Macron. Emi Martinez comes to join them to also offer his sympathies. The Villa keeper knows how to get under opponents' skin during a game, but after it he's got the right level of respect.

Mbappe will end with the Golden Boot, pipping Messi to the prize, but that will be scant consolation.

  16. Aguero joins celebrations

FT: Argentina 3-3 France AET (4-2 on pens)

Look at Sergio Aguero in the background, behind Lionel Messi, celebrating!

The former Manchester City striker may have been leading the line for Argentina in this World Cup if he hadn't suffered heart problems last season, that forced him to retire.

    Chris Sutton

Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

I feel for Didier Deschamps and his French team.

They showed so much resilience, kept coming back, but this is Messi's final.

  19. 'Thanks for the entertainment'

FT: Argentina 3-3 France AET (4-2 on pens)

    Alan Shearer

Former England striker on BBC One

It was a pleasure to be here yo see it. Thank you to Messi and Mbappe. The way Argentina kept going, the mentality they had to score in terms of the belief. Well done and thank you for entertaining us. It was just unbelievable.

  20. Post update

FT: Argentina 3-3 France AET (4-2 on pens)

Mbappe is currently sat on the France bench, his shirt pulled up to cover his face, unable to quite take in the heartbreak of the moment.

Next to him, Olivier Giroud looks to the sky. Feels like an age since he was dragged off in the first-half with France flagging.
