  1. Post update

    England 0-0 Italy

Not quite the atmosphere of that final in 2021. How could it be?! But the crowd lifts as England look to press high. Italy work it around and escape.

England players sing the anthem as fans hold placards to make a flag behind.
  2. Post update

    England 0-0 Italy

A point will do it for England. Kalvin Phillips is right into the action with a high boot on Giovanni Di Lorenzo.

  3. KICK-OFF

    England 0-0 Italy

It's England v Italy at Wembley again. Away we go.

  4. 'England need to build experience of seeing tough moments through'

    England v Italy (19:45 BST)

    Rob Green

Former England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

In the big games in the major tournaments, against France in the World Cup for example, you could sense when England are in danger.

You could sense when they are struggling and they haven't then been able to see those big moments through.

In Italy, in the reverse fixture in Naples, they should have been three or four nil up, the game should have been gone but it wasn't, and they really suffered. But, that time around they saw it through.

That is where they have fallen short in tournaments before and we want them to build on that experience of seeing situations through.

  5. Unbeaten in home qualifiers since the brolly game

    England v Italy (19:45 BST)

    Steve McClaren

England have suffered just one defeat in their last 62 major tournament qualifiers (World Cup/Euros), a 2-1 reverse away at Czechia in October 2019 (W49 D12).

At home, the Three Lions are unbeaten in their last 35 such games (W31 D4) since losing to 3-2 to Croatia in November 2007 under Steve McClaren.

Italy haven’t lost any of their last 22 away European Championship qualifiers (W17 D5) since a 3-1 defeat to France in September 2006. If they avoid defeat here, they would set a new record for unbeaten away Euros qualifiers - Romania also had a 22-game run between 1991 and 2007.

  6. Post update

    England v Italy (19:45 BST)

The teams are out on to a pitch decked out with huge banners saying 'Our England, our family'.

We'll have the national anthems, a moment of silence for the Sweden fans killed in Brussels last night and then a whole game of football.

A moments silence is observed by players on the pitch.
  7. Another hat-trick hero?

    England v Italy (19:45 BST)

England have won their past 12 home European Championship qualifiers by an aggregate score of 47-4.

A player has scored a hat-trick in four of their last six on home soil - Raheem Sterling vs Czechia (March 2019), Harry Kane vs Bulgaria (September 2019) and Montenegro (November 2019) and Bukayo Saka vs North Macedonia (June 2023).

Saka holds up three fingers to celebrate scoring his hat-trick.
  8. Kane's qualifying form

    England v Italy (19:45 BST)

Harry Kane has been directly involved in at least one goal in 17 of his 18 appearances in European Championship qualifying for England (20 goals, 8 assists), including the last 14 in a row.

The only game he didn’t score or assist in was against Estonia in October 2015.

Harry Kane strikes a penalty versus North Macedonia.
  9. 'We have experience of winning big matches'

    England v Italy (19:45 BST)

Gareth Southgate addresses the media alongside Kyle Walker.

England boss Gareth Southgate says his current team are a different side to the one that lost the Euro 2020 final.

"[We have] experience of winning big matches, consistent performances. We've been ranked in the top five in the world since 2018. I don't think there has been any other period over the past 30 or 40 years where that's been the case," Southgate said.

Luciano Spalletti's Italy are second in Group C and level on points with Ukraine, on whom they have a game in hand, and who they play in their final qualifier on 20 November.

Southgate said England will not be reckless in search of victory. "If it's the 87th minute and we're level, we don't need to lob the goalkeeper into the box," he said.

  10. 'A really good test'

    England v Italy (19:45 BST)

    England

England boss Gareth Southgate, speaking to Channel 4 about selecting Kalvin Phillips: "It is tactical. I felt Kalvin did a really good job against Scotland. He is a different sort of player to Hendo.

"Tonight is a really good test against one of the top nations in the world. We have to go and cause them as many problems as we can."

  11. 'Golden opportunity for Foden to seize central role'

    England v Italy (19:45 BST)

    Rob Green

Former England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

Foden high fives mascots when he arrives in the tunnel.

We don't really need to worry about the front line, that's taken care of in a way, because it will be horses for courses.

Some games will suit some players more than others, one may call more for Jack Grealish, or it'll suit Phil Foden or Bukayo Saka, or whoever it may be.

It is that role in behind that needs thinking about, Southgate has changed that up in friendlies and the 'free hit' games and stuck another attacking player in the middle. That hasn't always worked, too many creative influences and not enough control.

Phil Foden has shown his versatility for Manchester City, but I know for a fact that he wants to play more central. This could be the opportunity he has been waiting for with England, and he has to take it.

  14. Is this the real England 'Golden Generation'?

    England v Italy (19:45 BST)

    Phil McNulty

    BBC Sport chief football writer

Foden and Rice join Bellingham in celebrating his goal v Scotland.

England's current squad was handed the bouquet - some might say the burden - of being labelled "The Golden Generation" after the recent win in Scotland.

Those three words, uttered in this case by former Liverpool captain and manager Graeme Souness, might send shivers down the spines of long-time England observers who have heard it all before, only for that promise to be left unfulfilled.

They were most strongly applied to Sven-Goran Eriksson's side, who reached Euro 2004 in Portugal and the World Cup in Germany two years later but never even touched silver.

Euro 2004 saw huge underdogs Greece secure a stunning victory in the final against the hosts in Lisbon's iconic Estadio da Luz (Stadium of light).

Those of us in Portugal then would rank England's failure to win that tournament as a missed opportunity to rank alongside any in recent years, such as the 2018 World Cup semi-final loss to Croatia and the Euro 2020 final defeat by Italy on penalties at Wembley.

In 2004 England's side was littered with world-class players in all positions, apart from goalkeeper, but they went out on penalties to Portugal in the quarter-finals, and then did exactly the same - at the same stage - in Germany in 2006.

So is this really England's new "Golden Generation"? And how many of the new breed would get in the 2004 side ahead of the old guard under Eriksson?

    Read more here.

  15. 'Bellingham can be the difference'

    England v Italy (19:45 BST)

    Jude Bellingham

Jude Bellingham can be the difference in England's bid to win a first men's major tournament since 1966, says Three Lions team-mate Kieran Trippier.

Gareth Southgate's side host Italy on Tuesday, knowing a win would seal qualification to Euro 2024.

Midfielder Bellingham has scored 10 goals in his first 10 games for Real Madrid this season.

"With the maturity, quality and aggression he's got, he's frightening," Trippier said of the 20-year-old.

Bellingham, who joined Real Madrid for 103m euros in the summer from Borussia Dortmund, was an unused substitute in that final penalty shootout loss to Italy but has since established himself as key member of Southgate's midfield.

"If you play well there in Madrid, the fans will love you. It's no surprise to me how he's started there because Jude is frightening," said Newcastle full-back Trippier, who played for Atletico Madrid between 2019-2022.

"Jude did unbelievable at Dortmund. He's taken that experience with him. You see he's playing with a freedom and the players around him are going to make his standards get even better. The most scary thing is he's only 20 year old. He can be the difference.

"But if you look throughout the whole team, from 2018 to now we've taken massive steps.

"We lost in the Euros final, but the most important thing is we're progressing, we're doing very well. We've got players who can change games, we've got goals from all over the pitch.

"Jude, Madders (James Maddison), obviously Bukayo (Saka), Phil (Foden), they can change games in certain moments. They're still young. Representing England is a big thing but these guys are playing at the top level."

  17. Yet another betting scandal in Italy

    England v Italy (19:45 BST)

BBC Sport contributor profile Mina Rzouki.
Tonali runs with the ball in Italy training.

Achieving one draw and a win in his opening two games as Italy boss in September, Luciano Spalletti has since been forced to play whack-a-mole by dealing with a never-ending list of problems as he settles into his new role.

Contending with a heavy list of injuries is one thing, but Italian football is now staring down the barrel of yet another betting scandal that has gripped the nation.

On Thursday, at the National Training Centre of Coverciano, prosecutors arrived to inform Sandro Tonali and Nicolo Zaniolo they faced an official investigation regarding alleged illegal betting practices.

They were permitted to leave and return to their respective clubs as they would not be in the right condition to play these important qualifiers.

Juventus midfielder Nicolo Fagioli had already voluntarily reported himself to the authorities according to his legal representatives and is co-operating with the investigation.

Spalletti is now without another two players he had hoped would help him secure vital results to ensure qualification.

  18. 'Current Italy side considerably weaker than former greats'

    England v Italy (19:45 BST)

    Jason Burt

Telegraph journalist on BBC Radio 5 Live

Kean, Berardi and Darmian celebrate Italy's goal v Malta.

When you think of Italy, you think of one of the great powerhouses of European and World football. But this current side are considerably weaker.

They have a new coach, Luciano Spalletti who has just come in, there are the betting investigations being faced by Sandro Tonali and Nicolo Zaniolo. They are not in the strongest situation, missed the last major tournament, that being the World Cup in Qatar. So they are fairly weak opponents in comparative terms.

Let's not forget that England also beat them in the reverse fixture in Naples, a very strong performance and victory away from home. So it will be quite a shock really if England don't manage to get at least the point they need this evening to qualify for the Euros next summer.

  19. Is Spalletti the man to reignite the Azzurri?

    England v Italy (19:45 BST)

BBC Sport columnist Mina Rzouki contributor profile.
Spaletti shouts instructions onto the pitch from the sidelines.

The last time Italy played at Wembley, we watched Roberto Mancini and Gianluca Vialli embrace as Italy defeated England to win the European Championship in 2021.

Two years later and after missing out on Qatar 2022 there are fears that Italy will somehow contrive to once again be absent from a major tournament.

The problem the Azzurri had under Mancini, especially in his final year, was that the quality of the football was diminishing, and the lack of a great striker became a problem Italy could not overcome.

Spalletti wants to push the players even harder, challenging them to explore the creativity within to play "free football" with "personality" and fluidity. However, good football will not be enough. The team must mature and show the right character to recapture former glories.

No excuses, no complaining, the team comes first, this family comes first. Humility, adaptability and hard work can help the squad push on. This is the message from Spalletti.

Can they manage it? We are eager to find out if this is the start of a long journey or if Italy are closer than we think to being a team to believe in.
