The IOC has confirmed that the next edition of the Youth Olympics, to be held in May and June 2022, has been awarded to Senegal. This means that for the first time ever, an African nation will host an Olympic event.

Africa’s debut as an Olympic host had been a foregone conclusion, with continental rivals Botswana, Nigeria and Tunisia the only other contenders after the IOC recommended this year that an African nation should stage the 2022 YOG.

Senegal president Macky Sall described the decision as “historic for the IOC, Africa and Senegal” and thanked the IOC “on behalf of all the people of Africa, for making a difficult but ambitious choice that follows the Olympic ideal.”

Sall, 56, went on to promise his country would do “whatever it takes for Africa to receive you in the exceptional conditions that conform to international standards.”

The 2022 Games will be sited in the capital Dakar, the new town of Diamniadio and coastal town Saly. The budget for the event, currently set at $150 million (£116m), includes the renovation of the Senghor stadium in Dakar. A new 50,000-seat arena is already under construction.

Although Cape Town bid for the 2004 Olympic Games and South Africa hosted the 2010 World Cup, Africa has had little in the way of major international events.

Among the many honoured guests at the Youth Olympics are the Wild Boars football team, who became internationally famous when they were rescued from a cave in their native Thailand in June after becoming trapped.

The team, aged 11-16, played a friendly game against the under-13 team of Buenos Aires powerhouse River Plate, who kitted them out in violet jerseys for the occasion.

They played at the Monumental Stadium, which was the venue for the 1978 World Cup final. The Wild Boars had also attended the opening ceremony of the Games.

"It's really a spectacular moment because these boys have lived really terrible moments," said River Plate president Rodolfo D'Onofrio said. "We are very happy to receive them - today they were players of River Plate".

"The kids are very happy to be here, very excited," said Werachon Sukondhapatipak, head of the Thai delegation.

"During the rescue operation many people from around the world came to Thailand to collaborate in order to save them. They feel they owe everyone around the world."

The final score in the game, although it barely mattered, was a 3-3 draw.

The boys, and their coach Ekapol Chanthawong, were trapped underground for 17 days before the rescue, in which one diver lost his life.
