Afghanistan's Asghari becomes IOC member at 24published at 22:29 British Summer Time 11 October 2018
A young Afghan woman, Samira Asghari, 24, has been named as one of the nine new members of the International Olympic Committee elected during the IOC’s sessions at the Youth Olympics.
IOC president Thomas Bach praised her “fantastic work” in promoting sport among women in Afghanistan. “And we all know only too well that is not easy in that country for numerous reasons,” added Bach.
A former national basketball team player, Asghari is active in the Afghan Olympic Committee and a member of the Asian Olympic Council. She is one of the youngest members in the history of the IOC.
Her father practises martial arts and her brothers are gymnasts. Asghari told the IOC she is working “for the future of all athletes in the world, especially for those who have the greatest need, like in Afghanistan.”
She also told the Committee that conditions for women in sport are “starting to improve.”
She added that working for the Olympic movement in Afghanistan would not be easy. “But it’s still a step forward, a starting point,” she insisted. “If we can establish the spirit of sport there, it’s a big success for Afghanistan and the IOC."
