  2. 'Scotland have a great chance'published at 09:04 British Summer Time 16 August 2023

You lot were in optimistic mood when I asked you to hit those thumbs earlier, and Peter Wright believes that Scotland are well placed to reach the knock-out stages of the World Cup.

"Overall, the warm-up games have been good," he said on BBC Radio Scotland. "There's loads of positives to take from the two games against France - they were outstanding for spells in both games.

"In a very Scotland kind of way, we seem to have 10-minute spell where we seem to implode and concede lots of points, and that's the one worry for me. The attack is really good, defensively at times we're magnificent, but there is this spell in games where we seem to concede a number of tries.

"That's the bit they've got to eradicate, maintain their concentration levels and composure for the full 80 minutes, and you know what, we'll give ourselves a great chance to get out of the group stage."

Scotland squad announced. We’re in scenic South Queensferry with stunning views of the great bridges and awaiting the arrival of the chosen men.

Saltires being pinned to walls of the host venue. Atmosphere building. The weather outside is lovely, which is a change to when the 2019 squad was announced at a dreich Linlithgow Palace.

The rain that day might have been a portent of doom for what was to come in Japan. Maybe the brightness of today is a good omen. Maybe...

Stuart McInally is the big talking point. Genuinely thought he had done enough to make it. He’d looked powerful in his appearances in the warm-up games but Dave Cherry’s excellence off the bench against France at Murrayfield and Ewan Ashman’s youth has done for him.

That’s McInally retired now. Cruel. He was the big talking point on this day four years ago as well, only in a very different way. He was named captain. Best of luck to him. This will be a tough day for the big man. A tremendous Scotland player.

  4. White passed fitpublished at 08:51 British Summer Time 16 August 2023

There were concerns as to whether first-choice scrum-half Ben White would be passed fit for the World Cup when he hobbled off against France at Murrayfield earlier this month, but the 25-year-old now looks set to play a full part, which is a major boost to Gregor Townsend.

He's also got George Horne to call upon when needed at nine, and the Glasgow man has been in superb form recently.

  5. Postpublished at 08:40 British Summer Time 16 August 2023

We've already seen key players from other nations ruled out of the upcoming World Cup through injury, but Scotland have so far, touch wood, avoided such headaches.

England's Jack van Poortvliet and France's Romain Ntamack will both watch the tournament from the touchline.

With just one warm-up game to go, against Tier Two side Georgia, you suspect that the likes of Finn Russell, Blair Kinghorn, and Duhan van der Merwe will be wrapped in cotton wool before Scotland's clash with South Africa on 10 September.

  6. McInally exclusion a shockpublished at 08:33 British Summer Time 16 August 2023

Former Scotland prop Peter Wright has been giving his immediate reaction to the squad on BBC Radio Scotland:

"We've been very fortunate that we haven't had many injuries, and the squad is largely as expected.

"Stuart McInally is the biggest surprise, with the experience that he's got. He's probably missed out for Ewan Ashman, and I don't think Ashman is quite there yet, although he will be there in the future.

"We don't know what's happened in training, but I think on form and experience, McInally will be really disappointed."

  7. Fagerson boostpublished at 08:26 British Summer Time 16 August 2023

Remember, Zander Fagerson will be available for Scotland's opening match at the World Cup after receiving a reduced ban for charging into a ruck.

The Glasgow tighthead prop is named in Townsend's squad, despite being sent off for a high tackle on Pierre Bourgarit 50 minutes into Scotland's win over France at Murrayfield earlier this month.

The third match in a three-game ban is to be replaced by a "coaching intervention programme", which will allow him to play when Scotland meet reigning world champions South Africa in Marseille on 10 September.

  8. McInally appreciation postpublished at 08:21 British Summer Time 16 August 2023

Stuart McInally has made 49 appearances for his country, scoring 11 tries.

    Some player.

  9. The unlucky fourpublished at 08:14 British Summer Time 16 August 2023

That means that Stuart McInally, Murphy Walker, Josh Bayliss, and Jamie Dobie are the four players cut from Gregor Townsend's 37-man training squad.

McInally was Scotland captain four years ago, but there will be no triumphant last hurrah in France - he retires from rugby in November to become an airline pilot.

So we think the four positions at risk are scrum-half, prop, hooker, and back row, but let's find out for real shall we?

The squad has just been announced.

  12. Time for more cuts - analysispublished at 07:59 British Summer Time 16 August 2023

    Tom English
    BBC Scotland's chief sports writer

Off the back of three warm-up games, Townsend now needs to make a few cuts.

It's not hard to identify those who make a habit of second-guessing the inner workings of Townsend's mind when it comes to selection - they're the ones in the clown shoes - but it's time to get the crystal ball out again. And the red nose to go with it.

On Wednesday morning, Townsend will announce his World Cup squad. From the current group of 37, four need to be culled - most likely a scrum-half, a prop, a hooker and a back row.

  13. What do you think?published at 07:55 British Summer Time 16 August 2023

How are Scotland fans feeling going into this year's tournament?

Can we get by without Stuart Hogg? Is Finn Russell going to live up to his talismanic billing? Can we escape the group of death?

Give us a thumbs up or down.

  14. 'There shouldn't be surprises'published at 07:50 British Summer Time 16 August 2023

    Andy Burke
    BBC Scotland rugby reporter

I think the biggest shock when Gregor Townsend names his World Cup squad later this morning would be if there are any shocks at all.

Four years ago Huw Jones missed out and Stuart McInally was revealed as captain. Don’t expect any such headline-grabbing stories today.

It speaks to the continuity Townsend has established with this squad. One of the lessons from the last World Cup was to get the squad numbers down more quickly, and so when the final 33 is announced there shouldn’t be any surprises.

Good morning and welcome to our live coverage of Scotland's squad announcement for this year's Rugby World Cup. The excitement has nearly made me drop my toast.
