Good news for a Brit

Ah, the smell of sun cream drifting through the air, sparking memories of seaside holidays... Watson, though, must remain focused and not let her mind drift to those long, heady summers in Barry Island. At 30-30, the game is evenly poised. Crisp hitting from Hantuchova. Watson a tad too timid. The Slovakian steps in from the middle of the court, a crackerjack winner for break point.

That's your lot. After Liam Broady's thrilling five-set win over Marinko Matosevic on Monday, comes a dose of cold reality from David Goffin - ranked 167 places above him.
Still a very creditable campaign that puts £47,000 of prizemoney in the credit column of his current account.

There was a special visitor to the All England Club as the son of footballing great Sir Stanley Matthews, Stanley Junior, popped into Wimbledon. "What is the relevance of this?" I hear you say. Well, it is a little known fact that Matthews' junior was the last Brit to win the boys' singles title here way back in 1962.
Based in the USA, he is making a rare trip over to the UK to take a stroll down memory lane at SW19, but also to continue work on a film celebrating his father's life and achievements, which will be released next year.
"Every year a Brit gets close to winning the boys' title the British press phone me up and say, 'how would you feel about somebody taking your record?' my reply is always, 'I'd really like it so then you guys wouldn't phone me up any more'." he joked.

Tuesday's attendance at the All England club was 42,191 - which was 482 down compared with the second day in 2014. Apparently organisers were forced to reduce the number of spectators allowed into the grounds because of the heat. You've got to leave room for fans to hide in the shade, I guess.

Watson has flicked the switch and the engine is now firing. She launches an ace to merrily skip to 40-15. A feather-soft touch at the net seals the game in the Briton's favour. Impressive movement from the 23-year-old.

"A popping champagne cork in the crowd distracts Watson as she prepares to serve - you can hardly blame people for taking on liquid on a day like this though. On court, some wayward groundstrokes from Hantuchova are giving the girl from Guernsey encouragement and her break of the Slovakian's serve has some people on their feet."
Watson breaks again
Hantuchova 3-4 Watson*
Spectators on court one nod in approval, applauding as Watson pounces with a dreamy forehand winner down the line after forcing Hantuchova across the other side. Canny.
Hantuchova wild on the forehand, which allows the British number one to nibble at her lead, levelling at 30-30. A baseline slug-fest ensues... thump, thump, thump... Watson clips the net... oof... Hantuchova, though, with an adrenalized forehand and the Briton has a break point. Hantuchova with a botched backhand and Watson breaks!

*Hantuchova 3-3 Watson
Ah, the smell of sun cream drifting through the air, sparking memories of seaside holidays... Watson, though, must remain focused and not let her mind drift to those long, heady summers in Barry Island. At 30-30, the game is evenly poised. Crisp hitting from Hantuchova. Watson a tad too timid. The Slovakian steps in from the middle of the court, a crackerjack winner for break point.
What will Watson do next? Attack. Break point saved, and the Briton screams as if she's just seen Anthony Perkins on the other side of the shower curtain.

In the words of the famous Jason Donavan hit - any shade will do. I've paraphrased slightly. Programmes are being turned into makeshift hats, proving that there's a Blue Peter presenter within all of us. After an hour of, at times, pretty ferocious hitting with Andy Murray, James Ward is done for the day.
"Murray has more work to do, though, and Amelie Mauresmo takes over from Jonas Bjorkman to feed him some forehands for him to attempt some winners. "Go for it, yes! Just shoot wherever you like," yells Mauresmo as she tries to keep the intensity up, which can't be easy in this heat. I'm sweating just watching this session and I'm going to need an ice bath myself when they finish.

Novak Djokovic has first use of the main stage today.
The world number one, defending champion and one the rest have to beat is up against Jarkko Nieminen.
Nieminen, 33, will retire at the end of this year. Djokovic has never lost at a Grand Slam to a player ranked as low as the world number 92.
Keep your eye on those towels, I think Nieminen's fingers might be itchy for some last SW19 souvenirs.

Just to see the physicality of and play in a best-of-five sets will be a big learning curve for hm. The next step is such a big step."
Court Changes
Kei Nishikori's withdrawal means there there is a bit of a change of plan in the referees tower.
Ninth seed Marin Cilic and Ricardas Berankis have been hooked in from court three and will fill the Centre Court slot vacated by Nishikori and Santiago Giraldo. They will follow Novak Djokovic and Jarkko Nieminen.
Fernando Verdasco v Dominic Thiem is shifted in from court 16 to court three.
The curious case of Kyrgios
Australia's Nick Kyrgios has been getting a bit of stick in his native press. The 20-year-old, who has quite a cavalier approach to the game, threatened to walk off court in a dispute with the umpire in his win over Diego Schwartzman on Monday.
Our colleagues at BBC Monitoring have picked out a selection of stories to measure the reaction down under.
"Stop living the cliche," says Peter FitzSimons of The Sydney Morning Herald.
Sam de Brito, columnist for The Age, says: "We waste all this time wishing young hot heads like Nick Kyrgios were polite and humble.."
And John Anderson of the Herald Sun adds: "Off the court he is a likable young man who hails from a very normal and decent family."

But who are Suzanne Strong's regular clients? "Surprisingly, it's the men who monopolise the service," says Katie Wright. Appointments are at a premium but would she make room for the British number one if he turned up without one? "Definitely."

History in the making
It only needs to get a little bit hotter for us to witness history. Oh, yes. But if you are excited, just think of BBC weather forecaster Simon King. Today is his Christmas and birthday rolled into one.
"Highest official observation for Wimbledon so far is 34.3°C," writes BBC weatherman Simon King. "So close to beating the record (34.6°C).
"Cloud has increased over Wimbledon now which will inhibit further temperature rise for now. Cloud could still break up enough later to still climb above the record. C'mon cloud, shift it… I love a weather record!"

"These practice courts are used pretty much non-stop from 10am to 6pm during the Championships and obviously take a bit of a pounding - we are only on day three and already there is not much grass left behind the baseline of court 16, which is Murray's regular haunt for a daily hit.
"The groundsmen do their best to keep them looking lush though - the practice courts are watered every night and trimmed every other day."

It is fascinating to hear Andy Murray muttering away to himself as he goes through forehand and backhand drills from the baseline with James Ward.
"Andy, come on what are you trying to do with that ball, coming charging forward?" he asks himself in the third person after his mistake ends one rally. His coach Amelie Mauresmo is much more reassuring, telling him "that's great, you are hitting it really true," after a lengthy exchange of shots.

You don't want to make Ivo angry
Oh these summer nights, hot and humid, the air sticky and stifling. Sleep? Not a chance. Oh, and if you're Ivo Karlovic there's the added disturbance of some construction work outside your abode. Someone's going to get some angry serves thrown their way.
Attendance drop
Tuesday's attendance at the All England club was 42,191 - which was 482 down compared with the second day in 2014. Apparently organisers were forced to reduce the number of spectators allowed into the grounds because of the heat. You've got to leave room for fans to hide in the shade, I guess.
There's no place like home
Not everyone will be experiencing Wimbledon's heatwave. Puerto Rico's Monica Puig seems content to be flying to Miami after her 5-7 6-3 6-1 defeat by Monica Niculescu. It's currently a pathetic 28C in Miami. Pah. Although, it is only 6am in the party city.
The heat rule
One day we will stop talking about the weather, but that day isn't today. There are rules and regulations to protect players playing in furnace-like conditions. The heat rule was introduced in 1992 and is in use at all WTA events throughout the year.
For those of you wanting to know a bit more, the rule has been implemented at The Championships twice before, on 23 July, 2006, and 30 June, 2009.
Wimbledon weather watch
BBC weatherman Simon King has been in touch and provided us with his Wimbledon forecast. (It's rain, I'm afraid... Japes.)
"If you thought it was hot yesterday, prepare yourself today," he says. "It's already hotter than yesterday afternoon and temperatures at Wimbledon are expected to reach 34 maybe even 35°C.
"It's worth noting that the highest official recorded temperature at Wimbledon is 34.6°C, which was during the famous heatwave of 1976. There is a good chance we could beat that record.
"To make matters worse, it'll be more humid today so feeling more uncomfortable for players and spectators too."
A whole lot of Stan
Alternatively, you could copy Stan Wawrinka who has decided it's better to play in the nude in conditions such as this. The French Open champion flashed his flesh for ESPN's The Body Issue.
Heatwave tips
If you need advice on how to keep cool in a heatwave, the British Red Cross tweeted this a couple of years ago. I'm not sure they've thought through the practicalities of it all.
What the papers say
A smiling Heather Watson will greet you on the back page of the Independent.
"Watson showed all her battling qualities to save three match points," says Paul Newman of the only British woman left in the singles draw.
What the papers say
"Murray leads four British musketeers," The Times declares. Murray, I presume, is d'Artagnan while James Ward, Liam Broady and Aljaz Bedene will have to fight it among themselves over who will be Athos, Porthos and Aramis.
Don't be happy - Ivanisevic
Britain shouldn't get too carried away with the success of its tennis players in the first round, says former Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic.
"You are happy that five guys are in the second round, maybe one is going to the final," the Croat told BBC Breakfast. "With the amount of money I think there should be more guys in the third and fourth round. It's getting better, but still it could do better."
A Wimbledon Brit-fest
Good news for a Brit
For the first time since 2006, Andy Murray was joined by three other British men in the second round as Liam Broady, Aljaz Bedene and James Ward also made progress. Hurrah!
Britain's premier female player Heather Watson also reached the second round, saving three match points on her way to beating Caroline Garcia.
What the papers say
Front pages, back pages, middle pages... 2013 Wimbledon champion Andy Murray adorns the front page of the Scotsman.
"There were enough wobbles to mean it was possible to claim Andy Murray survived what amounted to a scare here at a sun-baked Wimbledon against Mikhail Kukushkin," writes Alan Pattullo.
Murray topples Kukushkin
So, to the tennis... British number one Andy Murray is through to the second round, beating Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan 6-4 7-6 (7-3) 6-4 as the temperature hit 41C on Centre Court. (Sorry, I just had to mention the weather.)
"I found it difficult to play aggressive tennis out there," said Murray. "I was glad to get through in straight sets."
Gates are open
The stewards have been given permission to unlock the gates and, immediately, thousands begin to filter through. They're not allowed to run to their desired spots, of course, so many are walking as if they're in desperate need to visit a rest room, which I suppose they might be after queuing for hours. It's best not to think about it.
Gates set to open
We've just received our five-minute warning. "Ladies and gentlemen, can I have your attention please," requests the voice from above before informing us the All England Club's gates will swish open, allowing thousands of tennis fans to enter the grounds.
Official confirmation
The roof is closed
Breathe easy. I can confirm, after a quick dash down the stairs to the lower levels of Centre Court, that the roof is indeed closed and the air conditioning has been turned up to the maximum. I'm assuming it's in a bid to keep this arena as cool as an ice pack before play begins.
Roof is closed?
Holy macaroni! A shadow is looming over Centre Court. Slowly, a darkness creeps across the turf like a scene from a sci-fi movie. Either the roof is being put into action or we're heading for Armageddon and are about to be visited by members from another planet whose spaceship is hovering above Centre Court.
And now for the weather forecast...
"Another hot one today! Temperature topping out at around 34 or 35C, but 30C likely to be reached quite widely," tweet BBC Weather. Cover up or slap it on. Right, I'm beginning to feel like Michael Fish so let's talk some tennis.
Record-breaking temperatures?
BBC Weather inform us that the hottest day on record at Wimbledon was a fiery 34.6C in 1976. What happened in 1976? Ah, we've been there. Let's move on.
Post update
Hello! Welcome to Wimbledon Live. We're into the third day of the Championships. Temperatures are rising and the competition is even hotter. I think the Weather Girls once wrote a song about it. Top seeds Novak Djokovic and Serena are in action today. Will they reach the third round? Maybe. Possibly. Who knows?
That was the summer of '76
1976. What a dizzying year that was. Abba's Dancing Queen had the nation tapping their feet and a star was born as Sylvester Stallone was catapulted to stardom, punching and mumbling as Rocky Balboa.
It was the year when everyone seemed to ride a Raleigh Chopper and the world was introduced to the VHS home video cassette recorder. The average weekly wage? £72.
Oh, and there was a heatwave as the mercury rose to record temperatures - hitting 34.6C in certain corner of SW19. I won't mention the water shortages, national strikes and the raging inflation. It's not really in keeping with the tone of the day.
