More from Emma Raducanu, speaking to Tim Henman: "It means everything to hold this trophy and I don't want to let go right now!

"Yesterday there were weird feelings I couldn't put my finger on, I think that's just normal, when I came out it was business as usual, one point at a time. I had to fight hard for that first set and keep myself ahead in the second.

"In the key moments, I came out with some clutch serves and was changing direction as early as possible."

  5. 'Almost perfect performance'published at 23:42 British Summer Time 11 September 2021

    Laura Robson
Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 Live

There are so many sliding doors moments. Before Wimbledon Emma didn't have a main draw wild card. Would she be in this position if they hadn't upgraded it? Would this happen if she hadn't had to retire from the fourth round with breathing problems. The amount she learned from that experience is what has got her to this moment.

She played an almost perfect performance in her first Grand Slam final. You have to think there will be so many more.

More from US Open champion Emma Raducanu: "Leylah is always going to play great tennis and fight, that is why she is in the final, I knew I would have to dig deep.

"I fell somehow and thought that would throw me off balance - I was praying not for a double fault! We got through it and focused on the process and mindset, that really helped in those tough times.

"It shows the future of women's tennis and depth of the game is so great, every player in the draw has a shot at winning any tournament, I hope the next generation can follow in the steps of some of the legends, for example Billie Jean right here.

"It means so much to have Virginia Wade here and also Tim Henman, British icons and for me to follow in their footsteps... it gave me the belief I could do it."

And here is your US Open champion, Emma Raducanu: "First of all, I really want to congratulate Leylah and her team, she played some incredible tennis and has beaten some of the top players in the world. The level was extremely high and I hope we play each other in many more tournaments and hopefully finals.

"As for this three weeks in New York, I would say having such a supportive team, the LTA my agent, and everyone back home watching on TV, thank you so much for your support over the years.

"Thank you for making me feel so at home from my first qualifying match, you have spurred me on in some difficult moments and I hope me and Leylah put on a good match today."

Speaking to her parents: "You are amazing with me when I had my lows. Thank you for always having my back and believing in me. I want to say I hope to be back here in the finals with the right trophy."

First to talk on the podium is Leylah Fernandez, she says she hopes to be back with a trophy at some point - I'd say it is a pretty good bet that she will be. At 19, she has enjoyed a wonderful breakthrough tournament and reaching the final is a sensational achievement by the Canadian.

    Laura Robson
Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 Live

We kept saying before the match Fernandez had the practice in the pressure situations but it didn't really matter because Emma delivered the tennis that got her to the final. She was so aggressive, could see what was happening over the net and read the game fantastic. She found a way to dig deep and win.

She is going to get better and better.

  15. 'Mindboggling'published at 23:22 British Summer Time 11 September 2021

    Pat Cash
Former Wimbledon champion on BBC Radio 5 Live

I cannot believe it. It is unheard of for a qualifier to win the US Open. Ivanisevic won Wimbledon as a wildcard but he had already been to Wimbledon finals, not playing a second Grand Slam. She hits so cleanly. I cannot come up with a reason for this to happen. It does not make sense at all. Her performance is mindboggling.
