The British Figure Skating Championships is the pinnacle of the national figure skating calendar.

This year, it returns to iceSheffield with Olympic hopefuls Lilah Fear, Lewis Gibson and Dundee-based Natasha McKay in actions just months before they hope to compete in the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games.

Current British Champion PJ Hallam is set to skate in the men’s competition, as well Ed Appleby who is stepping up to the Senior category.

Figure skating is hugely popular and forms the basis of many winter sports you would usually see at the Winter Olympics.

While it is graceful, it also requires focus, flexibility and balance. Don’t let this put you off as it can still be for everyone and easy to learn, whether for fun or to be part of a competitive team.

A good place to start would be at your local skating rink where you can use their pair of skates and begin gliding across the ice.

The British Ice Skating Association, external provides a club finder to locate the closest rink to you.

They also offer volunteer opportunities where you can develop your knowledge of the sport through training and watching experts in action.
