Isle of Man TT: Guy Martin to race British-built bike

Guy Martin will compete in both Supersport races at the Isle of Man TT on Triumph machinery for the Gloucester-based Smiths Racing Team.

Martin will join Australian Dave Johnson in the team with both men riding Smiths' 675cc Triumph Daytona.

It will be the first time that Martin, 33, has raced a British-built bike around the Mountain Course.

The Kermington rider said: "I wanted the best tool for the job and I think Triumph is the bike to be on."

Martin continued: "Alan and Rebecca are proper people who run a fantastic team and to win on their debut last year says a lot about them."

Last year, the Smiths British Supersport team claimed victory in their first year at the Isle of Man meeting, when Gary Johnson won the opening Supersport race.

This year, the team's TT effort will be spearheaded by Dave Johnson on both BMW and Triumph machinery.

The 31-year-old from Adelaide will compete in all the main solo classes and is looking to build on a fourth-placed finish in last year's Superstock race.

Johnson said: "I feel it's my time to be on machinery which is capable of being at the sharp end in every race.

"I'm also happy to have a team mate like Guy Martin for the Supersport TTs.

"I'm so grateful for this opportunity and I will do everything I can to get the best out of myself and to get the best results I possibly can for the whole Smiths team."

The ambitious team, who won the British Supersport Championships in 2012 and 2014, is run by father and daughter duo Alan and Rebecca Smith.
