England netball legend Geva Mentor has said that she is "happy and content" having announced her retirement from the game.

With two matches remaining in the current Super League season, the 40-year-old Leeds Rhinos defender will play in the final games of the campaign before ending her playing career.

"I'm very happy and content with my decision, the time is very right to retire," Mentor told BBC South Today.

"Last year I wasn't sure if I was ready but after a couple of games this season I knew it was right.

"I've been able to play the season and be competitive but I'm ready for the next chapter so I can stay at home a lot more and have less travelling.

"I'm ready for the next realm and to change my goals and perspectives on things. It won't be easy and I still don't know what is exactly next but I'm really looking forward to it," she added.

It’s farewell to one of the greats this weekend as netball says goodbye to one of the world's greatest players of modern times. Geva Mentor will take to the court for a final time on Sunday for Leeds Rhinos after announcing her retirement. The 40-year-old’s career spans 24 years, the highlight of which was winning gold for England at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Leeds Rhinos have struggled this season, winning just two games to leave them second from bottom in the standings. Their final game sees them travel to the Motorpoint Arena to face league debutants Nottingham Forest.

Forest came close to qualifying for the play-offs but succumbed to a strong performance from Birmingham Panthers in the last round, which meant they are now unable to finish in the coveted top four.

Sunday’s match will be all about pride as Nottingham Forest want to prove that under Chelsea Pitman’s guidance they will be a team to be reckoned with next season, whilst Leeds Rhinos will want to give Mentor a fitting send-off.
