Niall Morgan leaves Dungannon Swifts to play GAA for Tyrone

Goalkeeper Niall Morgan has left Irish League side Dungannon Swifts to become part of the Tyrone senior GAA squad.

Morgan played in the Red Hand county's McKenna Cup win over Derry on Sunday.

"It wasn't an easy decision at all but it came down to which sport I love that little bit more," said Morgan.

"It's a new opportunity and a new challenge for me but you only get one chance to play for your county," added Morgan, who faces stiff competition from Pascal McConnell and John Devine.

"I was brought up in a gaelic football household and have played the game since I was four or five, while I have also been part of the Dungannon set-up since I was young."

Tyrone manager Mickey Harte said he was "very happy that Niall has thrown in his lot with Tyrone".

"If you want to be a top class athlete you can't divide your time between two sports, which is a pity as many people are good at more than one sport.

"Individuals have to make their mind up which one they really want to go for," added Harte.

Swifts boss Darren Murphy wished Morgan well in his senior intercounty gaelic football career.

"It is massive to lose someone of Niall's quality, but I hope it works out for him at Tyrone and, if it doesn't, there will always be a place for him at Dungannon."
