John McGuinness set a new race record

John McGuinness produced a stunning ride to win the blue riband Senior TT and claim his 20th success at the famous Isle of Man road races.

The Morecambe man's victory denied Michael Dunlop a record-equalling fifth win of the week.

The race was rescheduled when 11 spectators were taken to hospital after a crash on the opening lap.

Barnsley rider Jonathan Howarth crashed at Bray Hill less than a mile from the start.

McGuinness saw off Dunlop by 10 seconds to set a new race record, with New Zealander Bruce Anstey in third.

"This is absolutely fantastic," said the 41-year-old after the race.

He added: "I thought I wasn't going to win one this week but I pulled it out of the bag. I pushed and pushed and concentrated right until the end.

"The reception out on track was incredible, there were so many fans out there," he added.

Dunlop led his Honda Legends team-mate McGuinness by 1.3 seconds after lap one but a lap of 131.27mph saw McGuinness move 2.5 seconds ahead after the second circuit.

McGuinness extended his advantage to six seconds after the fourth lap and 10 seconds by the end of lap five.

Anstey set the fastest lap of the race at 131.53 to close the gap on Dunlop to just 7.5 seconds at the flag.

Kawasaki rider James Hillier was fourth, Guy Martin fifth and Michael Rutter sixth.

Australian newcomer Josh Brookes retired at the end of lap one, while his compatriot Cameron Donald and Lincolnshire rider Gary Johnson called it a day with mechanical problems following the second lap.

Leading Manx hope Conor Cummins was forced to park up his Milwaukee Yamaha midway through the final lap.
