Eugene Laverty failed to make it into the points at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone as he ended in 17th place on his Aspar Honda in driving rain.

The Toomebridge rider has picked up just 12 points in his first season in the MotoGP class, with a best finish of 12th in Spain.

Valentino Rossi regained the lead in the championship with victory in an incident-packed wet race.

Italian Danilo Petrucci grabbed a maiden premier class podium in second.

Andrea Dovizioso pushed Jorge Lorenzo off the rostrum by claiming third.

Rossi mastered the treacherous conditions best as his closest rival Marc Marquez crashed out on lap 13 to all but end his revival in the championship battle.

Rossi's first win at Silverstone takes him above Jorge Lorenzo in the standings as he chases a 10th world title.
