County football finals: Cross bag Armagh title as Derrygonnelly win Erne final
- Published
Crossmaglen retained the Armagh club title thanks to 2-16 to 1-7 victory over Clan na Gael in a one-sided Athletic Grounds final on Sunday.
Michael McConville's goal gave Clan a four-point lead before the holders seized control with Jamie Clarke and Ronan Fitzpatrick netting.
Derrygonnelly beat Belleek 2-8 to 0-9 in the Fermanagh final despite having Aidan McKenna sent off.
Goals from Gary McKenna and Shane McGullion earned victory for Harps.
The goals came at the start and the very end of the Brewster Park as Erne Gaels failed to capitalise on McKenna's straight red card for attempted striking in the first half.
Derrygonnelly led 1-4 to 0-3 at half time thanks to McKenna's early goal.
Belleek, last winners in 1981, improved after the break but Harps held on for a seventh title in nine years.
Erne Gaels' star county forward Ultan Kelm rattled the crossbar as they chased a two-point deficit in stoppage time and after clearing their lines, McGullion finished a breakaway Derrygonnelly goal to set up an Ulster Club preliminary round clash with Down kingpins Kilcoo on 5 November.
Derrygonnelly failed to reach the final last year for the first time since 2014 and were fired up to reach the summit again and when Conall Jones' shot was saved by Erne 'keeper Barry McCann, Gary McKenna's low finish gave them the perfect early platform.
He tagged on a free before Rian McGovern fired over another point to stretch their lead.
Erne Gaels, who lost last year's final to Enniskillen, did not settle well and hit four wides before Kelm scored their opening point midway through the opening half.
Harps suffered a blow when Aidan McKenna was given a straight red card for attempting to strike Odhran Johnston and Belleek responded with points from Thomas McCaffrey and a cracker from Michael Og McGarrigle.
Derrygonnelly led by five points, 1-6 to 0-4, after 10 minutes of the second half before Erne Gaels came to life with skipper Ryan Lyons coming to the fore.
He converted a mark, a monster free from outside the '45' and a point in an influential three-in-a-row to leave just a goal between the sides.
With five minutes to go, the game was in the balance before Shane McGullion got his fist to a free that had dropped short to give Harps some breathing space.
Erne Gaels struggled with their kickouts but still got to within a point though Kelm (free) and a Luke Ryder score just at the end of normal time.
Ryan Jones' shot just creeped over the bar in stoppage time and when Kelm missed, McGullion finished at the other end to ensure the New York Cup returned to Derrygonnelly.
Cross ease to Orchard success
Clan na Gael were aiming for a first Armagh title since 2014 and the Lurgan side made a bright start at the sun-kissed Athletic Grounds.
Stefan Campbell put the challengers in front before Cross hit back with scores from Oisin O'Neill and Paul Hughes.
Two more points from Campbell and one from Sean Mackle saw Clan open up a two-point lead and after Rian O'Nell pulled one back they netted the first goal of the game.
It came on 26 minutes with Campbell's deft touch finding McConville and he flicked into the net to give Clan a healthy cushion.
However, that was to be the high point for Clan, for they only added another three points in the game as Cross swept them aside.
Seven straight points either side of half-time started with Cian McConville (2) and Rian O'Neill scores leaving Cross trailing 1-4 to 0-6 at the break.
Clan's Ciaran Campbell was black-carded on the restart after a foul on Aaron Kernan and Cross capitalised as Stephen Morris levelled before points from Rico Kelly, Fitzpatrick and Hughes.
Substitute Matthew Lennon halted the run with a much-need Clan score but Cross were soon back rifling over points with Rian O'Neill, Cian McConville and Morris on target.
Cross were five in front when Clarke tucked a penalty into the corner penalty on 51 minutes after Jamie Bradley hauled down Thomas Og Duffy.
Cian McConville and Fitzpatrick stretched the Cross advantage before Clarke and Clan's Dairmuid O'Hagan were shown black cards in the same incident.
Fitzpatrick palmed into the net from close range a minute from time and Cian McConville registered his fifth score between Clan points from McPartland and Dairmuid Loney.
