Career highlights
Payne became the first British athlete to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games when she regained the world title in the 10km open water event last July.
The current Olympic open water silver medallist has also enjoyed success in the pool: she won a Commonwealth Games medal in the 400m individual medley and smashed the British 1500m freestyle record by more than eight seconds at the National Championships in March 2011.
Career background
Payne started learning to swim when she was four and says she could "do proper front crawl" by the age of five.
She marked her first senior international meeting, just two days after her 17th birthday, with a 400m freestyle gold medal at the European Short Course Championships.
Personal
Born to British parents in Johannesburg, she moved to Britain when she was 13.
She is due to marry fellow British swimmer David Carry after the Olympics.
