Career highlights

The Scot won a surprise silver medal in the 470 class at the 2009 World Championships only a fortnight after teaming up with Englishman Stuart Bithell.

The duo then went on to win another global silver two years later, earning them selection for the 2012 Olympics. They reached their highest world ranking of third in 2011.

Career background

Patience is originally from Helensburgh on the west coast of Scotland and began sailing at the age of seven, encouraged by his dad.

He won European Junior Championship gold in the 470 class with Chris Grube before the pair parted company in 2009. After sailing a few regattas with Cal McDonald, Patience teamed up with McDonald's former sailing partner, Bithell.

Did you know?

Patience was the first Scot to be selected for Team GB ahead of the London Olympics.

He lives just 300 yards from team-mate Bithell in Portland, Dorset.
