Rio Olympics 2016: Germany win men's and women's quadruple sculls

Germany claimed the first rowing gold medal of the Rio Olympics with victory in the men's quadruple sculls - then won the women's event too.

The men's crew held off Australia to retain their Olympic crown, with Estonia finishing in third.

Britain's team of Angus Groom, Peter Lambert, Jack Beaumont and Sam Townsend were in the bronze-medal position after 500m, but did not make the podium.

Germany's women beat the Netherlands into second, with Poland third.

Annekatrin Thiele, Carina Baer, Julia Lier and Lisa Schmidla chased down the Poles, who had led for most of the race, to snatch gold.

The finals were rescheduled after strong winds curtailed racing on Wednesday.

The German men's crew of Philip Wende, Lauritz Schoof, Karl Schulze and Hans Gruhne led from the start at the Lagoa Stadium, and held on despite being pushed hard by Australia.

Team GB have never won a medal in the discipline, and their preparations were hampered after Beaumont was drafted in nine days ago to replace Graeme Thomas, who was ruled out because of illness.
