Rio Olympics 2016: Carolina Marin beats India's PV Sindhu in badminton final

Spain's Carolina Marin became the first non-Asian woman to win Olympic badminton singles Olympic gold by beating PV Sindhu in the final in Rio.

World number one Marin, 23, won 19-21 21-12 21-15 to add the Olympic title to her world and European crowns.

"I'm very excited," she said. "I don't know how I'm feeling now but it is amazing that my dream has come true. I just had to believe in myself."

Sindhu, 21, was aiming to become the first Indian to win badminton gold.

She said: "It means everything to me because it is my first Olympics and I am a silver medallist, so I think I am on cloud nine.

"It's been a fantastic week for me so it's time to celebrate now. I am really happy. It was a fantastic game today - she played brilliantly and I congratulate her."

China's Fu Haifeng and Zhang Nan took men's doubles gold with a 16-21 21-11 23-21 victory over Malaysia pair Shem Goh and Wee Kiong Tan in a thrilling final.

Great Britain's Marcus Ellis and Chris Langridge won bronze on Thursday.
