Rio Olympics 2016: Nicola Adams and Joe Joyce qualify for boxing semis

Britain's Nicola Adams guaranteed herself another Olympic medal, as she and super-heavyweight Joe Joyce reached the semi-finals.

After receiving a bye in the first round, London 2012 gold medallist Adams was too classy for Ukrainian opponent Tetyana Kob.

Joyce clubbed his way to a points win against Uzbekistan's Bakhodir Jalolov, who was lucky to see the final bell.

The results mean Britain have reached their target of three boxing medals.

Joshua Buatsi won Team GB's first boxing medal at Rio 2016 by securing bronze at light-heavyweight.

Adams faces a semi-final against China's Cancan Ran at 18:00 BST on Thursday, while Joyce will fight Kazakhstan's Ivan Dychko.

Defeated semi-finalists do not fight again and both receive bronze medals.

Adams is aiming to become the first British boxer to retain an Olympic title for 92 years.

"Once you get the first fight out of the way, you get rid of the ring-rust," Adams told the BBC.

"I wasn't at my best there but I'll improve as the competition goes on."
