What to expect from the Scots on Monday at the Olympics

Could Monday be the day that the first Scottish athlete adds to the Team GB medal tally?

Duncan Scott will hope so. Fellow swimmer Katie Shanahan might too. And will mountain biker Charlie Aldridge have gone to his bed last night dreaming of being on the podium?

Which Scots are competing & when?

It will have been an early night for Kirsty Gilmour on Sunday, given she's on court at 07:30 BST in her first of three group matches in the women's badminton singles.

Shanahan will also be up and at it, with her 400m individual medley heat - the one where she does two lengths of the pool butterfly, two backstroke, two breaststroke and two front crawl - from 10:00.

Do well there and she'll hopefully have the final to come at 19:30. A medal might be a stretch, but we said that about the Bishopbriggs youngster at the Commonwealth Games too before she went home with metal around her neck.

Scott is no stranger to success himself, obviously, with Britain's most decorated Olympic swimmer looking to go one better than his silver in Tokyo in the 200m freestyle final (19:40).

The Alloa man held it in a touch in qualifying, but there's every chance the big-time performer will uncork the good stuff for the final after lifting it significantly for the semis.

And another Scottish Olympic gold medallist - Kathleen Dawson - will get her first shot in the pool when she goes in the heat (10:00) and hopefully the semi-final (19:57) of the 100m backstroke.

Aldridge, meanwhile, goes in the men's mountain bike event from 13:00. Again, it would be a shock if he gets a medal, but someone has to win them.

The Scots in the rowing squad begin their Olympics, too, with Sholto Carnegie (11:40) and Rowan McKellar (12:00) competing in the heats of the men's and women's eight respectively.

In the water off Marseille, sailor Fynn Sterritt goes in the second block of three races in the men's skiff 49er.

The 35-year-old from Kingussie will be joined by James Peters in what is officially described as "a light open dinghy with a self-draining hull" - so a wee boat, basically.

In the women's rugby sevens, Lisa Thomson will be involved when GB play South Africa (13:00) and hopefully in a quarter final later in the day.

In hockey, Amy Costello, Charlotte Watson, Sarah Robertson will be in action as GB's women face Australia (16:00) in their second pool match.

How can I follow the action?

Since 2018, the way the BBC covers the Olympics has changed. More on that here...

However, you will be able to watch on BBC One, the BBC iPlayer, listen on BBC Radio 5 live and BBC Sounds, and catch up with the biggest news stories and medal-winning moments on the BBC Sport website and app, and across social media.
